I have a STRONG Gas smell comming from under the UIM underneath the rats nest. Is this the charcoal canister and if so, I can't see underneath the rats nest at all so can someone get me a shot of exactly where the Charcoal Canister is becouse I read it is under the Throttle body somewhere I think. I have looked, looked and looked somemore but to no avail.

Please don't say, search, search search. The truth is I have damn searched all over the place and I cannot find the specific answer I am looking for and that is a flat out good shot of exactly where the Charcoal canister is and what it is located against. I bought a new one and I need to replace it if I knew where it was specificly.

It's probably the fuel pulsation dampener going bad on you which is attached to the primary fuel rail which is next to the rat's nest. This is a common source of engine fires on the 3rd gen so I STRONGLY recommend you don't drive the car until you find the source of the leak.

 

check your FPD fuel pulsation dampener, it is right at the end of your fuel rail closest to the firewall, usually that goes out and starts leaking fuel..

It could be the FPD or your injectors are leaking. This will only get worse. Fix it fast. Don't want an engine fire.

 

Nah, take your time. Just don't start the car or smoke cigarettes near it until it's fixed

 

BTW, the charcoal canister is under the car near the gas tank - it's not in the engine bay.

this happend to my friends car and it was one of his fuel lines was leaking under the steel braid. Good luck.

 

Good luck with that. I had a really bad primary fuel rail leak, and my whole engine bay was engulfed in flames. Its not a pretty sight!

 

 

I got the same problem.. after i did a hard run.. i pulled over to show my friend the engine bay.. i kept hearing a pssssssssssttttttttt. like the water was boiling or someting... but it was coming from near the manifold.. couldn't really find it where it was coming from but it smelled like gas and all no leaks under the car or nothing... then it faded away.. min. later drove it home poped the hood again.. and nothing.. didn't hear anything.. lot of peeps saying check the Fuel Pulsation Dampener. does any 1 have a picture of the damn thing???? i know some 1 said it was near the fire wall and all but that don't help much .

Do you know what the "rat's nest" is? If not, I'd recommend you take your car to a knowledgeable rotary mechanic....

 

Yep, run a search for "FPD" within this forum. Replacing it isn't hard work, just tedious and time consuming. You can see what's involved (pictures) in my vacuum hose replacement writeup at www.davidgeesaman.com, or the other vacuum hose / rats nest writeups linked in this forum.

It's a hard job when all your vacuum lines are rock solid and during the course of removing the upper intake you snap off a check valve <cries> So make sure you have plenty of replacement parts on hand before attempting the job (or do a complete vacuum job while you're at it)

Driving around town with no boost really sucks...

If you havent figured it out, dont drive your FD if you smell gas !!!! Plenty of extra crispy 7's photos on the forum to make you respect the gravity of this failure. I had my PD go in traffic, it smelt like someone was pouring gas in the interior. I pulled over and had it towed...no fire

 

yeah.. i'm taking it to the shop today so i can do a fuel presure test.. one of the members said it has to be around 70psi i guess... if thats fine theres no leaks.. i figure right?..

 

Download the Factory Service Manual and base your work on something in print. Not that your source is wrong (70psi sounds right for a dead-head fuel pump pressure test), but you need to be able to find this for yourself. The FSM is linked the first sticky thread, and the fuel tests are in section F.

found the problem.. i removed the plastic uper intercooler piping and the strut bar.. and its the first injector.. was making the pst. noise... i had some light this time and could see little bubles around it... its not Leaking but the vapor is i guess.. very very very very little... eventually it will get worst.. so i got a screw driver and pushed it down from the plug and it stoped a little so its coming from the injector. so my mechanic said it was the O ring.. just called mazda and they have a upper and lower mind as well do both... so its 9.60 for one and the other is 12.00. 21.60x2= $43.20 for both injector O ring.. and i'm thinking about replacing that fuel pulsation dampener since im at it... thought about removing it.. so i dunno...

ohh one more detail.... It only makes that noise when its off.. like 1min. later after you turn off the car i guess.. maybe less than 1 min. cuz thats when the pressure is actually building up... cuz there's no where for the gas to go.. so yeah... but other wise.. no puddle no excess no nothing.. which is a good sign.. my point view no chance of Fire the way it is because the injectors are constantly open and gas is flowing so it won't leak. (its common sence) "correct me if i'm wrong.".. but of course the longer I wait the more the chances and the "leak" will get worst.. NOw i just ordered the o rings and its coming This Friday...

 

You might simply want to buy a newly refurbished injectors. RC engineering (www.rceng.com), for example provides new o-rings when they clean a used FD injector (not OEM o-rings, but they work fine). If you're going to pull them out of the rail, it only makes sense to have them cleaned so you can leave them alone for another 60-100k.

I just did a similar thing - bought a set of newly cleaned injectors, and sent my for cleaning later so I had minimal downtime.

Oh, and a shameless plug - I have a new FPD for sale in the FS section. It would be a really wise idea to change it while you have easy access.

How much you want for them?? and they come with the O rings i believe right.. and will i be able to use the OEM rings i got from the dealer.. i reather use them.. cuz i heard the aftermarket are not so good..
