That's good to hear you are "friendly" with Knight Sports Ramy. I plan on this metalit cat, dual tube front pipe, and the ti exhaust from them. I would also like their vmount & radiator. I plan to fab a box to connect to my HKS Racing suction pipes to work with the vmount. You will hear from me.

Its hit or miss on the air pump connection from what I can tell searching through various threads here. Some pass some don't. I suppose that like many things relating to modded rotaries, the determining factor is the tuning.
If you're gonna go through the trouble of welding the cat in, you might as well go ahead and weld in an air pump inlet. Even if its just something you can attach a high temp hose to.
Cheers.

130 cell count on the Apexi is ok. My metalit metalic cat is 200 cell and it is tiny and very short. THe other company that makes metalic cats has a 300 cell count. From the pictures the Apexi looks to be at least three times as long which is better then having a higher cell count. Since the less cells the more flow has a trade off of more emissions, Apexi made theirs longer to compensate. I think it's a very good idea. I will be removing my spiralflow and adding a second metalit in its place.
The Revo Tune looks amazing. The welds are beautiful and would I love to have a muffler that fit in my mid pipe. I would think it's a perfect choice for a ported engine and the Apexi is perfect for non ported. Well, except for the prices.

For those guys who are making their own midpipes with resonators and cats which one do you have go first? I wasn't sure if you would need the cat first to get the most heat or put it later to lessen the heat to make it last longer.

Personally I am looking into making my own Highflow and I can't see how you could fit a reasonable Highflow onto a midpipe.
I am looking at a Model # 94309 from Magnaflow, I am almost sure it is the same as Jason uses in his midpipe (except his has the airpump hookup). It is 16 inch long, I don't know how you could add a muffler to that.
I don't know the measures of the two main designs of midpipes out there (Pettit and Ebay) but the Pettit seems to be the type that would be the most suited for making a Highflow cat out of. Anyone else have any ideas?

The topic of this thread are cats that utilize a Metal Substrate core, not the Ceramic core cats like dradon3 is referring to.
These universal metal cored cats are generally 4" in overall diameter with 3" inlet/outlets and are about 12" in overall length. The actual core length is probably only 9" so it fits quite well in a mid pipe and leaves enough room to install a proper muffler/resonator such as the 5x8x14" Magnaflow.
Dradon - if you're going to go through the trouble of adding your own ceramic based cat core, rx7.com aka Bonez sells their cores directly also and are of very high quality. Don't know why you would bother making your own since they sell them pre-made already....

Lots of good info in this thread, thanks to all that have replied.
Gracer,
I could always try the cat without an airpump hooked up and if it doesn't pass connect an electric air pump like Carson has done.
Personally I'd like to get ahold of the revo-tune midpipe. I'm sure I can fit my metallic core into my Rx-7 store midpipe, but I doubt it will be the same quality. I'll see if I can work with Ramy in some sort of a group buy if we have enough interest. Granted the retail on these pipes is around a grand already, I dunno how many people are willing to drop that kind of cash on this stuff. If I can get one of these pipes I'll try to do some before and after with and without an airpump. Also if I can get a local shop to weld my metallic core (forget what brand) into my current midpipe, I can do the same testing.

You should be able to get a local guy to weld it pretty easily. Since I had a straight mid pipe, it literally took us 20 minutes to measure, cut & weld the Random Tech cat into the mid pipe. It'll be a little more of a measure 2-3 times and cut situation with the resonated mid pipe but its do-able. Might want to tack it together first and do a test fitment as the angles are kind of awkward up front. Probably won't be more than 1-2 hours of work max.
Do whatever you think is best. You do have a sweet looking car, but quality parts are quality parts - Random Tech and Magnaflow are quality.
The Revo Tech in this picture is pretty cool and pretty much what I'm looking to do with the cat and muffler: http://revo-tune.jp/catalogue/detail.php?id=43
But 102900 JPY = USD 877.xx
http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi
That is just too much $$ for what this part is imo. Especially when you consider that the catalytic cores are mass produced by a few companies world wide and chances are everyone is using the same basic raw materials.
Good luck.

Ofcourse I agree that it will never be the same quality as the RevoTune, but the price tag doesn't match either. The FD has a nice interior but what is it when compared to a Veyron.
I would never spend 1,000$ on a highflow I can pay off many exhaust tickets and dry cleaning bills for that price. Even with a group buy I don't think that you could get a REVO for less than 750$. Ramy orders it from them at a discounted rate, pays shipping, pays customs, takes a little cut sells it back to you.
For me it is trying to find something cheaper than buying an already made one that is what I am looking for.

I contacted SMB today (as recommended by Dale Clark) and they said they could make up one of their metallic substrate cats with a resonator, no problem...he's going to get me a price with shipping tomorrow, so I'll pass that along
this seems like the best of all worlds to me: no stink, passes emissions w/o an air pump, minimal pressure drop compared to a standard ceramic high-flo, light weight, and quiet
what's not to like?

If SMB could make a few of these and sell them at a reasonable price, I'd probably go that route. SMB seems to be the best of both worlds, quality and good price all wraped into one. I'm sure if I could find a local shop to fab up some SS midpipes with a resonator and cat then I could get theses built for much cheaper, only problem....I live in Delaware! If anyone knows of any places in the NE-Mid Atlantic that do good exhaust work let me know and I can get something going.

I really like the 90mm Revo-Tune. I won't be able to go in on a GB, but am willing to pay full price. I'm one of those guys that wil drop the dollar on something like this. I believe guys in smog strict areas care about these parts, since it also will allow the most HP instead of a conventional ceramic.

I have spent close to $700 and it's no way as nice as the Revo-Tune. If I would ahve know I would have paid the price in advance and would have been happier. I started with a trait pipe from Rotary Extreme. It was a good price ($250 I think) but I didn't consider tax and shipping. I added a metalit cat $150 plus $60 to weld it in. I kept the smell out but did nothing for noise. I added a spiralflow $120 + $60 to weld in. I am now going to get rid of the spiralflow and see if I can fit a Racing Beat presilencer. If not I may just add a second metalit cat.
The SMB cat + muffler sounds like a great alternative to the Revo-Tune. I think it all depends on what muffler they add in. The design or shape of the mid pipe may restrict what fits. I can only fit round cats and mufflers since it is as strait as possible, unlike stock which allows for a rectangular cat. Since they know how to make a rotary muffler then they should be able to make a rotary silencer to. I bet M2 used to buy their mufflers and rebadge them since their turbos also came from ...wait was it Canada or Australia?

You're right about just throwing the money down in the beginning. I still have a stock cat on and I'm seeing very little boost creep when I push it hard. So, no point in getting a more free flowing mid section until I get BNR's. I'd like the SMB, but I'm thinking about getting a regular oval style exhaust like the KS or the Revo style. They have the tilted tips, and I used to dislike them, but the more I see them on track FDs, the more I've grown fond of them. What does your mid section look like now, since you basically butchered it up?
