FD vs 350z
#51
Hey, guys... "Practical and reliable" figure somewhere down around which brand of windshield wipes to use. While the FD can be a reliable fast sports car, it should never be asked to be a reliable means of commuter transportation. You CAN do it, but you SHOULDN'T do it. However, the FD is a street car that is practical and fast as a track car, when you are compare it to a GT3 or an F430.
The 350/370Z is a much newer, more ultimately disposable car. Its probably more comfortable with the modern conveniences. And, it's a fun, dual purpose car you could commute in, whereas the FD is less that commuter for sure.

I've test driven a 350z and owned a G37s Coupe that was first to have the engine that's in the 370z. The Z/G are great cars and are reliable for sure. I agree they make great daily drivers but I have to say the fun factor was low for me. The FD just blows my mind at how fun it is to drive. You'll never get that in a 350z imo.
If you dont think a Z was fun to drive, doesnt mean another will think the same.
Like gmonsen said, the Z/G cars are a better choice for daily driver and especially the new Z/G's with the newer engine, will DEFINITELY compensate for the lightness and rarity of driving an FD.
SOme people really factor that in it seems when comparing an FD to another car. They think because the FD is rare, it will always have an advantage.
There is more to a car than just being looked at because the car is rare. I know my car gets alot of stares and attention. But when that happens, i also remember all the other times when people come up to me and ask about the car, knowing its just a "mazda", then lose interest right away.
Some people need to really think about that too.

Totally agree the fun thing is subjective. I'd just say drive both and make up your own mind or buy the Z if its for reliable transportation.
I would add though that I think if you want to upgrade the power, the FD might/maybe maybe not be a better solution. Especially if your talking upgrading a 370z. I know last year the kits for the 3.7L that's in the G37 and 370z were big dollars. You're talking 30-45k for a new car and then 7-15kish to turbo charge it depending if you do the install yourself and what supporting mods you add on top of the turbo kit. Might as well get a GTR at that point. Especially since turbo charging a z/g should really only be done on re-enforced internals. Some will argue this but that's my opinion when you are talking about forced induction on a normally aspirated engine.
Check here for the best place to turbo a Z imo.

Good luck.

Any car you buy will you have an itch to make faster.
Usually the general consensus of buying a new Z/G is not necessarily to make the stock version even faster. But its to enjoy what the Z has developed into.
Its such a well balanced machine, with the utmost technology and craftsmanship for its price. Nissan REALLY has stepped up their game. From the near flawless supercar for 100k GTR, to its mid level sports cars, the Z/G.
When you get one, you dont think damn i need to turbo this thing, its slow. Because there is always something faster.
They have so much usable torque, there is really no need to have any more power unless you have a lead right foot or plainly just drive like an animal constantly which is stupid anyway.
I think comparing the FD to the new Z is wrong because they are 2 totally different machines, almost to a point where (through the eyes of many), are used for totally different purposes.
It should be, IMO
FD or S2K
New Z/G or FD + cheap daily driver.
But i think you should have a daily driver no matter what if you own an FD. Even though your FD may have been running perfect etc

not to beat the subject to death, but i can speak from experience. I have a bone stock 06 350Z and a single turbo FD. Not having the headache of constantly watching gauges and PFC and monitor temps is worth having a slighly "less fun" sports car that you DD. I personally don't mind the constant maintenance and attention that comes w/owning FD, but most typical ppl would find it as a nuisance.

I was looking at buying a new Z in '05, but after 2 separate testdrives - the second one being a lot longer than your typical around-the-block routine - I came away very disappointed in the car's "sportscar-ness" and fun factor. It rode and drove basically no different than the G35 four door; and that's no surprise given they're built off the same platform. And, as everyone knows they share the same engine. Other than the fact it has no back seat, it's a sportscar in name only.
For a daily, ok. For a weekend toy, the Z is uninspiring and lame. Try the S2000 or FD for that, as the Z doesn't hold a candle to them for the true enthusiast.

The FD is a true sports car/drivers car and the 350 or 370 are GT cars which should be compared to a mustang and as some others have mentioned the s2k is more in line or has a similar sports car like driving experience to the FD so if mileage and reliability are important that's the car for you but it's also a slow power lagging car that's fun to ring out on a country road but rediculously (misspelled especially for no more rice) boring in town and much MUCH slower than a slightly modded FD. I sold my FD in 2001 and bought a 2000 s2k and within two months I had another FD and the s2k was for sale. As awesome as the s2k is (great car for the money) it's not in the same league as an FD in any way shape or form.
If you're handy with a wrench, can handle an oil leak (or two hehe) and have the desire to learn a finicky but brilliant turbo system inside and out etc... I say 110% get the FD because a well sorted FD with just basic bolt ons and a good tune (easy reliable 300 rwhp) can be daily driven for years with no worries and it'll provide lots of smiles that a 350Z could only dream of. It's the most fun sports car you will ever own outside of some true 100k plus super cars and if you're like me you'll have to DD it because it's absolutely addictive. The car has so much personality, speaks several languages, is light on it's feet, will make you smile every time the secondary kicks in etc...etc...
I HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM..............
