FD stock cat worth anything?

I keep on hearing of people getting their cat converter stolen on suv's. So I would like to know if an FD stock is cat worth anything? I have one laying around and not sure of it's value or should I just send it to the metal recyclers?

Yes. There are guys who buy them for $100+ dollars on the forums for scrap. Or you can see what your local scrap yard will give you.

yup sold mine for $100

i don't know how true it is, but what the guy told me was that the material used inside the cats from older cars is some really expensive alloy or something

doesn't really make a difference for me, i made a 100 bucks on a 15 year old part lol

I believe its platinum that was used in cats , why I dont know . but i've heard about the cat jackers to.

I got $130 for mine it was alittle broken inside.
I had gotten $175 for one off an FC parts car I had
right at the scrappers, they'll try to rip you off you just have to act like you know its worth more

yes the inside of a converter contains platinum, search local area for converter buyers they are everywhere

I was quoted 120 bucks from this scrap guy that comes to my job. But he said that's an estimate cause they have to look in the book and weight it?

I rather just sell it to someone that will use it cause its in excellent condition with super low miles. I think it would be a waste to scrap it.

Now the current cat in my car with 88k miles. That I will scrap.

Cool, I will sell mine too then. But what type of metal is inside exactly that makes it expensive? I am asking because metal recyclers here will have no idea, I have to know exactly what's inside to not get ripped off. Or they will offer to pay steel or aluminum prices.

I found a site claiming that a catalytic converter can carry b/t 3-7 ounces of platinum per converter. According to this site(wired.com), platinum is going at a rate of 2075 dollars per oz. This means you would at least have 6225 and up to 14 and a half thousand dollars if you could harvest the platinum purely. The next question is how do you get the platinum in a catalytic converter out of it to get this reward. Stolen catty's go for 200, but I'd rather not go that route. The site also mentione other metals involved in the production of converters such as rhodium and palladium are going for 445 and 7300 an ounce. I might have to recant on that whole not theiving idea.== Answer ==
There are usually about 3 grams of platinum in a catalytic converter. There are 31.1 grams in an ounce. Platinum is at $2000/ounce so you can figure right at $200 worth. Please note manufacturers are starting to use other materials so you may have very little, if any, platinum.

There are 28 grams per ounce not 31.1.



CORRECTIONS TO YOUR ANSWER

In every Kg of honetcomb which is the filter you find on average 1.5g of platinum (Pt), 0.5g of palladium (Pd) and 0.1 rhodium (Rh). Some catalytic converters have a heavy honeycomb while others are light depends on the engine size, if the engine is big car companies tend to use a bigger honeycomb. Regarding the ounce the internation ounce weight is 31.1g but the US ounce weight is 28g.

There are in fact 31.1 grams to a TROY OUNCE, which is the measurement used for precious metals. There are usually between 3 to 7 grams per catalytic converter, which is coated on a honeycomb ceramic substrate. There can be up to 15 grams of platinum in large truck catalytic converters.

*Clarification*

There are two types of converters, ones with the honycomb structures, and ones with platinum-coated pellets. The pellets are easy to harvest, but if you're going to havest them, make sure they're your own!

I'd highly suggest you guys save your cat. Unless you REALLY don't need it EVER again. Aftermarket cats are junk compare to the original, and if you were to buy new from dealer, you're looking at over $1k.

As far as worth goes, it depends on the current market and the size of the converter. Goes up and down. Hard to find a honest buyer tho who will pay you fair price based on the current market. $100-$125 sounds like the low end value, based on the size of a cat of a FD.

But if you're in SoCal and wanted to convert it into cash, I'd be more than happy to buy them off of you.

^^ For anyone who wants to pass smog, a good stock cat is just about required. Couple years back I passed with flying colors on a street ported Power FC controlled 1300 cc secondary injected non-sequential turbo no pre-cat setup. Bonez high flow wasn't doing it for me. Put the stocker (main cat) back on, no other changes whatsoever, and voila...

Don't scrap them, there are tons of people, esp. in CA that could use them.

^^^ What he said is right on the money.

To reiterate: The stock cat is high quality and high-flow (yes it's true). A few years ago I legitimately passed CA smog with a stock cat having 166,000 miles of use on it and 104,000 on the motor. (NO precat.) I have more recently legitimately passed a large ported motor to the newer, tighter CA standards again using a stock cat (Thanks Kensin).

Definitely don't scrap them. I will pay whatever a scrap yard will pay if it has under 60k miles.

They still work for smog with high miles but not so good for seq

At the end of the day... an item is ONLY worth what somebody is willing to pay for it.

If you find somebody WILLING to pay $2,000 for a stock cat, then that cat is worth $2k. If you can barely give it away for $125, then it's barely worth $125.

I sold both my cats to "MattBrown0761" and it was a simple and easy exchange!
I have a storage building FULL of original parts for different cars and the thought of adding more is just irritating lol.
