FD ranked #7 out of 10 collector cars built in the 1990's for under $40K
This article from Hagerty Magazine covers collectible cars from the 1990's. Hagerty's, with whom my FD is insured for agreed value, values a #1 condition FD for $22.5K. Here is what it says about our FDs:
7. 1993-1996 Mazda RX-7
By the mid-’90s, the Japanese sports car market had gotten out of hand. Turbocharging had sent power through the roof, and prices had gone right along. The top-of-the-line Toyota Supra, Nissan 300ZX and Mitsubishi 3000GT all offered over 300 horsepower, but were all priced well over $30,000. So was the third-generation RX-7, which took its customarily different approach. With a 255-horsepower, twin-turbocharged, 1.3-liter rotary, Mazda couldn’t afford to build a bloated pig, so instead crafted a smaller, lighter car, as pure a sports car as any Japanese manufacturer would ever dare. With a 2,850-pound curb weight, the RX-7 was fast, but its rock-hard suspension made most drivers furious. As it turned out, the sorts of dudes who had bought these cars in the 1980s moved on to trucks and SUV’s and the entire segment had all but disappeared by the end of the decade. But the RX-7 stands out as the jewel of the era, especially as a collectible. It was the least successful of its ilk, so production numbers were low, and its faults as a daily driver don’t matter much now. Hagerty Price Guide lists the third-generation RX-7 at 22,500 for a #1 condition car.

I too still have all my OE parts so I can "retrofit" if necessary. Right now, "necessary" would be defined as someone offering me "stupid" money for my car in original condition.

13,000 or so were sold in the US.
68,000 or so were made overall.
Do the math.
More than four times as many FD's were sold outside of the US (the majority being in Japan) as were sold in the US. Yet even still, given the population size, FD's are one of the most common out of production sports cars on the road in Japan today. I saw two just the other day, in a span of maybe an hour or two. In America I might see one every six months or a year.
The same thing goes for the AE86, which would definitely deserve to be on the list if you included JDM models since cherry examples go for more than they originally retailed for. That is the definition of collectible car. They sold waaay more Levins and Truenos then they ever sold Corolla GT-S's.

i think by the time they become very collectable mods will not matter much as that heavy modding has become part of our era. if you look on barrett jackson a clean rat rod sells for decent money and they built those cars back then for a few hundred bucks. all flat black, low, with a v8 hanging out the front. low milage completely stock fd like cym and r2 models will become collectable sooner then a modded one. id say in the next 10 years you will see those rare models jump in price from mid 20's to 40k+ and the modded units will be worth good money by the time were all in our 50-60's so give or take 20-30 years.
i believe the supra should be up there as well. weather or not that it is the supra will be collectable as well. stock and modded in the same time frame.
also i think it was 3-4 years ago pettit racing sold a 3 rotor rx-7 on barrett jackson for 50k plus.
edit... check out this link on some rx-7s that went thought barrett jackson. the modded units also hold there value and the yellow one is a bit over the top. but there is different taste for all out there.
