FD owners registry?

Does this exist?

Would be nice if we had a site that shows current status by date, car owned, trim level/color etc

curious how many of the ~13,000 are ACTUALLY in existance still

Severly broken? You asked if there was a registry that you could search, and the answer is yes, you can search that registry. There looks to be about 90 3rd gens registered right now, and thats not too bad considered the site just came online at the beginning of the year.

And you can't search the registry unless you have registered with it. Have you registered yet? If not, go ahead and register since I'm sure that everyone would like to see the list grow.

I know there are lot's of geeks on this site. What is the downside to putting your vin number out on the web? I know I read that you could email the security digit in the vin to the site, but that's not secure at all. If someone had your tag no. and vin what could they do with it? I can't think of much, but I'm not willing to risk it.

only thing I can think of:

if a scammer gets a hold of your vin, they can use your vin # for anyone interested in the "fake" sale so the interested party can check the vehicle's history (carfax stuff and recall info)

Not w/o the check digit...

Jon put a lot of time and effort into the site, and a lot of us put a lot of time and effort trying to find gliches and giving him feedback re: how to make it the best it can be, user friendly, etc etc.

Re: the VINs, I'm sure Jon has his info secured. The check digit is a good enough idea IMO, b/c you can't say, block out the last few #s of a VIN and be able to identify it from someone else's. And that's the whole point: to be able to keep track of cars. I think Jon wants to add a "dead FD" and/or "totaled FD" section too, so that when a car's wrecked, we can find that info, and it'll be permanently on the website, so potential buyers will have a history (and no, Carfax isn't enough). Also, it gives us an idea about the pool of FD's still available and running. But of course, this part would require Fritz to cooperate, as he's sent more FDs to the grave (by parting them out) than anyone else (j/k)

Another awesome part of this website is the image search. I'm pushing Jon, but things are slow now. I have a database of images sorted by manufacturer, and it has pretty much every manufacturer imaginable, w/ FDs sporting their parts. All the big ones, and all the small ones. Having all these images uploaded onto his server and included in the image search database would completely change things in the interior/exterior/audio section, as we wouldn't have 1001 pic request threads, since you could search for FDs w/ a particular sideskirt or spoiler or bumper in seconds, and come up w/ several matches.

I'd even like to extend it to things like exhausts, audio setups, the whole 9. But all this would depend on a) how much people would actually USE the site, and b) how much time and effort it would take Jon.

As is, I think it's a mighty start, and has made considerable progress. But I think it can become oh so much more...if we let it and help it. Heck, it could very well evolve to be an integral (or even integrated) part of the forum: a registry, and an image search!

I'll have to think about this some more. Isn't there a 1 in 10 chance of getting the check digit?

The only thing you might be concerned about is that someone could find the city that your car is registered in, if they checked using Carfax or a similar website.

For instance, here's a carfax report that I requested:
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=331476

Your VIN is visible from the outside of the car, so anyone who sees your car in person can find it. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Dear God...you guys who are so scared of ppl finding out your VIN, for $20 a pop, I can call up the DMV and have them FAX me a list of EVERY RX-7 registered in the state. Depending on the state, it'll give me the street address, city, state, zip, VIN, owner's name, etc etc. I can find out pretty much EVERYTHING about your car from the DMV, because so much of it is public information.

While I understand your initial hesitation, your hesitation is really unnecessary, and is simply hindering the progress of things like this Registry, which can become VERY useful in the future once it's in full gear.

This is ignoring the fact that some companies SELL your VIN along w/ your address for marketing purposes. Check your mail lately?

Would that be $20 per VIN, or $20 per report?

$20 per VIN/car etc. At least that's what it is here. It used to be $5, and every few years the price crept up. Now it's $20 a car.

I should shoot you Christian... C'mon man...seriously. And I'll get the pics to Jon. I'd suggest starting w/ purging the info in the sticky, and changing the title to say "Join the official RX7 Registry!" or something like that. And when pics are up, we can get a sticky up in the interior/exterior/audio section for "Image Search Registry!" or something like that, so ppl won't have to post all their pic request threads.
