Question FD main cat pipe layout

Hey FD guys, I am looking at adapting an FD main cat to my T2's RB exhaust.

Has anyone pulled the heat shield off of one to see exactly how the inlet/outlet pipes enter the body of the cat? Specifically, at the inlet side with the jog to get to the precat, it looks like the pipe enters the body at an angle (like cat1.jpg), but I'm thinking it could turn and make a straight shot into the body beneath the heat shield (like cat2.jpg).

Has anybody had a look at it?

Thanks
PS and thanks to the dude whose image I borrowed for the diagrams

why don't you just get a metallic cat from random technologies?

Google hits about high dollar RT cats rattling in their cans after a few months.

then you haven't read about all the fd cat failures then, eh. the metal substrate cats should work well. the ceramic ones won't.

I have read about the FD pre-cats buying the farm, but I wasn't aware it was a prob with the main cats.

RT actually recommended a ceramic cat for my app (I am going to be placing it in the DP, about 18" from the turbine outlet, and I'm looking some noise reduction). I emailed and asked about durability and I haven't heard back yet

i don't know who RT is, but that doesn't sound right.

ceramic is less resistant to heat than a metallic substrate cat is. i would speculate that a metal based cat would work much better and last longer than a ceramic based one espeically in that location. i also don't understand why you'd place it so close to the turbo either. i would think having it that close would make it spool slower.

i suggest you call random about the metal cat and get a second opinion on the placement of that cat. none of these places answer emails so don't hold your breath.

RT => Random Technology

I don't know for sure why they recommended what they did. Info has been slow in coming from them via email or phone.

As for the placement, I'm just basically putting the cat where there's room for it. I would like to keep the RB midpipe silencer to further reduce the noise (sensitive ears, DD commuter car). I'm not sure why the specific -placement- of a restrictive element after the turbine would affect spool up time. Clue me in?

Back on topic, I'd still really appreciate it if someone with knowledge could tell me how the main cat piping is done.
