What's thunderbolt to audio mean?.. haha
Yeah I would be real excited for your write-up. This comes in perfect time because I need some audio for the FD and I was going to buy a double din with GPS and stuff, but with the ipad you have better music options, PLUS gps as well!! So thats awesome! I would definitely need to do that.
So how does it charge? It's connected to power and charges whenever the car is on?

I absolutely HATE anything that has the Apple brand on it. IMHO Apple is the work of the devil and I will never ever own a single (cr)apple product as far as possible.
Having said that though, I do really like the install you did there OP. I debated doing this myself, but I would have used an Android/Windows based tablet.
In the end I went with the Pioneer double DIN touch screen unit, because I was lazy :p
Nice work

this is pretty much exactly what I did, magnets and all you can now purchase a pre made mount kit
$249.99 is kinda stupid to pay, if you have decent fiberglass skills, you can easily make one of these yourself
iPad mini Float-Mount? Kit : Soundman Enterprises inc

dwb87 hit the nail on the head. its the same as the rotary vs swap debate.
if you dont want anyone to put iPad mini's in RX-7's, you're gonna have to either buy every iPad mini, or every RX7.
If you dont want anyone to drag race RX-7's, you're gonna have to buy them all.

old post is old, but get over it. its not your car.

Drama aside, Id like to see more about this. Such as how you mounted it. How you hooked up the charger, headphone jack to the amp etc... I use a mini iPad in my work car but is on a clip mount. This is much nicer of an install.

Are there any really cheap windows based tablets out there than can run windows software. So I can load my ECU and Logworks software. Or anyone know of an emulator can emulate the windows environment?

This is actually inspiring.
I am in the process of planning a new system in the car as the rear Bose snake is not working (I will have to find out what is wrong with it, but I am inclined on to just ripping the entire system off and putting something different in.
I have looked into this a bit today, reading this thread, following the links and doing some extra research.
It is possible to get a HD that works with the iPad and what you can do is to basically stream wirelessly whatever media you have on the HD into the iPad.
So, I can see installing an iPad (I already have one and would get another mini for the car) in the place of the head unit. You'd get music or video out and you'd be able to have your entire music library with you all the time; you can have your home apps (like I have a garage door remote app) and you would have your GPS with traffic if you have it tethered with the phone (or you can go with an LTE iPad in case).
Radio is not a problem for me as I do not really listen to it, besides, there are apps to listen to internet radio and radio stations websites that stream live.
The one thing I can't seem to figure out is how to do hands free from iPhone to iPad. So far I wasn't able to find any way to do it. You can only if they are both attached to a wifi. So, you either install something like an airenabler in the car and then connect all the devices to it, or you have to go with and independent bluetooth system. Any suggestion in regards to this would be greatly appreciated.
I also found a video that spoke about how to send audio out and apparently there is no distortion at any volume level from the earphones out, so all it is needed for sound is a jack to RCA that gets plugged into the amp. Issue would be to control different channels, but I think I will go with just two really good door speakers. This would make it possible to attach the USB to a proper power supply to keep it charged. I don't care much about sound in the car, as long as it is decent, so 2 good speakers in the doors will do for me to cover the 4 cubic feet of volume inside the cabin.
I'll be looking at installing this permanently behind the dash piece, like it was done in the first post of the thread.
One last question: how do you turn it off when you turn the car off, if you do not have access to the sleep/restart button?
I have thought about 3D printing a mask to place in front of it when I get out of the car. It should really not be an issue around here, but that would likely be a good deterrent.

Looks good, Jacob. What type of pad is that, and what size is it? I want to install mine behind the trim piece, but that's pretty cool having it removable like that. I was looking at an iPad Mini at a store yesterday and it looks still too big to fit behind the DIN, like a lot of the screen on the edge would be covered. When compared to a 7" Galaxy Tab anyway.

mine is a Dell Venue 8 Pro. they are super cheap, like 200$ now (i think).
it's an 8".
the best thing is that it runs full windows8 (it has an x86 processor so it will run full windows) so i can run my haltech software on it and use itunes with my little amp and speakers.
it works very well!

Ok cool! I didn't realize Dell had a tablet in their lineup. Not a bad price either. I always wanted Windows on a tablet or something in the dash so I could use it on the PFC to tune or whatever, but since I'm switching ECUs and the company makes an app that will allow adjustment of boost control and traction control, I'll just go with the app. Sounds like yours has everything you need though. Sweet setup!
