rotaries are fun while they last. rebuilding rotaries is more of a hobby than an economically wise decision. when the rotary pops, v8 will take its place.
imo, torque is more fun. smooth torque delivery is more fun. throttle response is more fun. when the rotary pops, v8 will take its place.
hard for anyone to convince me that a rotary is reasonably priced to rebuild, has reliable torque to spare, can apply its torque smoothly, doesn't have dreaded turbo lag, etc.
i dont care for highway pulls, drag racing, or boasting big numbers. putting the FD through its paces on some road/track like it was designed for makes me happy.
i love the FD handling qualities, but power delivery is very ON/OFF compared to the more linear delivery in my v8 240sx, which handles like poo. haven't driven a v8 FD, but as long as two positives don't make a negative...
what was this thread about again?
edit, after reading post #1, i'd say drive it till it breaks then put a v8 in it. same cost, same power, more torque, and greater reliability than rebuilding the rotary. apparently the "cool" factor can sway either way on this, but for road/track use you cant go wrong with v8.

Still doesnt defer from the fact that problems arise from this complicated system. Obviously there are answers to it but not everyone is the same. This isnt the perfect world.
Troubleshooting isnt hard really, its time consuming and frustrating. But AGAIN, still doesnt defer from the fact that problems DO occur, whether you can or can not troubleshoot and fix these problems.
No i havent seen your build thread, didnt you know you made one, i havent went into the build section in problably over a year unless it was something LS swap related

Yes problems do arise but most of those problems can be fixed in much less time if people would just follow some of the how-tos rather than just change parts and hope for the quick fix.
And yes the world is not perfect. Duh.

If you follow some of the info on this forum and others troubbleshooting is not frustrating and not overly time consuming if you (the troubleshooter) realize how much time can be saved by testing all system components throughly rather than chasing a phantom problem.

So why are you on this forum if you do not view many of the sections unless they are related to V8's. Probably because you are a troll and do this for fun. Which is against forum rules. If you would view some of these build threads you will be able to see that there are a lot of people building cars on this forum without spending a ton of money.

You missed the point.
Never said problems can't be fixed, I'm talking about the problems that constantly arise. The car is finnicky. I been on this forum way longer than you to know what's the deal with this car.
Your first time at bat with a build thread doesn't make you an expert at the car. Sorry. I'll take my advice from guys like fritz, mahjik whom will agree these cars are finnicky.
Why am I on this forum? Because I still own an fd. Duh.
I don't care less about anything else. When I run into a problem with my fd which is the inevitable, I come here for help. I get it and I'm on my way.
And I'm subscribed to your thread, you know so I can follow your bulletproof setup. Or maybe I'll just be there with a smile when you DO run into a problem in the future.
You know. So I can say "I told ya so".

Never said problems can't be fixed, I'm talking about the problems that constantly arise. If you are constantly having problems then you are not fixing them correctly. Poor maintenance does dot mean a car is unreliable. The car is finnicky. I been on this forum way longer than you to know what's the deal with this car.Thats great that you have been here longer, that does not necessarly mean you know more. We can leave it at that because I have never seen you once contribute positively in a thread by someone asking for help other than if they want to know if it would be good or bad to swap in a v8.
Your first time at bat with a build thread doesn't make you an expert at the car.And do you think my build thread is one of he better ones here? My car is reliable, I finished the car one week before driving it 2000 miles and only had one problem with a brand new injector sticking open (not my fault). since then I have put another trouble free 1000 miles. Sorry. I'll take my advice from guys like fritz, mahjik whom will agree these cars are finnicky. Thats good to kow for when you need help. I wont be there to help. Just because I did not jion a long time ago does not mean that I do not know what I am talking about. I do not think you have any idea how much time I have spent on this forum reading threads. there is no need to insult someones inteligence based on their join date.

so if you are subscribed to my thread then how did you not know it existed?. Or did you just subscribe?

Haha love your unique way of quoting posts, then posting in red. You really are a "special" person lol.
I don't have any problems with my fd because well...I FIXED THEM. I haven't taken my fd to a shop in 7 years. And last I did they did a clutch which I don't have the tools or lift to perform. My fd has been pretty reliable honestly. 18k miles since then and no problem except for my shitty suspension and 2 bad rear wheel bearings.
Already making excuses for your build ? Stuck injector open? Haha ok I'll let that slide. To give you a fighting chance.
I couldn't give 2 ***** less if YOU don't help me in the future. You think I look foward to seeing your user name in any of my threads? Even if you don't buy anything I have for sale doesn't bother one bit. That's just one less hard headed person to deal with.
Yes the fd is 20 years old and WILL have problems..like I said before about that being the inevitable. Thanks for proving me right.
As far as your thread. I favorited it, not subscribed. Because I check my favorites more often. I don't use the forum features.
But be sure I'll be there at the "right time".

DJ... I don't know where you have gotten your information on NA 3 rotors? First, they can make 330-370 whp fairly easily and torque is flat from 3000-8000+ rpm. Very different power from 13b turbo. Logan's 490+ whp NA 20b is pretty extreme as a comparison to any 13b turbo. Much more useable power under the curve and completely linear power delivery, which is certainly better on the track. Also, prices for NA 20b are not much different than a full-on single turbo 13b. And, while turbos can be made much more reliable with WI and everything done right, an NA 20b is inherently as simple and reliable as an NA 13a or b. You can do a pretty cheap 400 whp 13b single, but it will still have the non-linear turbo delivery. Very different motors and power delivery. Not being pushy, but, have you ever driven an NA 20b? Most people who have driven mine or Logan's have come away pretty impressed and seem to get why someone does it.

FD a dying platform. Am I crazy to get one?
The OP has made his choice and the original intent of the thread has been satisfied, leaving this thread open only allows for more division of the 3rd Gen/Rotary community, which is not a good thing!
Ok 3rd gen guys, a question.
I always had a soft spot for FD's but never had a chance to own one. Now I have the chance.
I am currently looking at a single owner 1993 FD with only 28k miles.
So my plan if I buy it would be to install the Power FC, get it tuned conservatively for the mods and leave it alone. I would add water or water/meth injection for a bit of a safety margin.
The main worry I have is this: As great as these cars are, they seem to be getting more and more rare, parts are drying up and places to have them serviced & tuned are disappearing.
I love rotaries but I'm also cross shopping early NSX's (more reliable but more expensive).
What would you guys do?

Deal is made, I will be taking delivery in early july.
And yeah, as it sits the FD has 2 manual boost controllers keeping the boost at 8-6-8 until PFC and fuel pump etc can be safely upgraded. Those mods + stock computer = boom.
Probably will take it down to R3 in Santa Ana to have it tuned and dialed. Here we go.

The LSX will always win the war of which engine makes more sense, is practical/reliable, better etc.... but when it comes to our love/relationship with anything it's the instrinsic value of the entire thing that does it for us and when one thing is changed it greatly changes how we see or value that object. Lets face it the challenges and the happiness we feel for overcoming all the things that may or may not need fixing and then getting that little red head hot and running perfectly which when running correctly feels better than just about any other car there is to drive is what makes us unite with this car. With out the sequential (or single) setup, the rotary, the power delivery which is sooooo smoooooth and addictive (turbo) we wouldn't appreciate the car as much as we do. Put the LS or some other engine in this car and you just ruined the relationship IMO. In some ways it's like taking out the most interesting pieces of your wife like her brain and her va jay jay.
The looks draw you in but it's the rotary etc.... that keep you interested and make you fall in love with this car and to me it's the most exhilarating relationship I could possibly ask for between myself and a machine. Understand and accept this and you'll be happier with the car. When it's running correctly it's such an exhilarating car to drive that when it's down you can't stop thinking about it, trying to make it better, repair it/fix it etc.....etc.....again when that little red head is hot and ready to go nothing makes you feel better and when you are the one who's responsible for making her hot well DAMN it's just plain and simply an unbeatable feeling which the FD gives you over and over again
BIG CONSIDERATION: NOTHING and I mean nothing responds to mods like an FD and that in itself should always be considered. When you give she gives back TWO FOLD. There's a reason she breaks your heart though and that's because your heart is full of HER!!!!
Jeremy: (confesses to a priest) She's good. I mean, I believed that she was a virgin and it hurts to be lied to like that. It's a horrible feeling to feel that way. But I, you know, was looking to take advantage of something, too, so could I really feel that bad? It's not like I was who I was. You know what I'm saying? So fair play. And let's be honest with each other here, okay? Let's put all the cards on the table. She's fit for a straight-jacket, this broad is fucked three ways towards the weekend, and you want to know what? I dig it! It turns me on! Yeah, it turns me on! Because you want to know what the kicker is, Father? Maybe I'm a little ******* crazy! That's right, maybe Jeremy is a little nuts! And there's something about me that I'm a little cuckoo. I know it's a surprise. I know it's not on the surface. Man, I had a little imaginary friend when I was a kid. His name was Shiloh. We used to play checkers with each other everyday and bless his heart, Shiloh would always let me win.
Priest: Ha-ha-ha-ha.
Jeremy: And that ain't normal! There's something odd in that, but maybe that's what it takes to make you feel connected to somebody. I don't know! But I know when that red-head starts getting kooky, there's something about me that feels alive inside. Diggin' talking with ya. You're a really enlightened cat and I like that about you. Think you're a special special man. Come in for the real thing. Get in here for the real thing. (kisses the priest) I love you, you're a sweet man.

Priest: Dear
The looks draw you in but it's the rotary etc.... that keep you interested and make you fall in love with this car and to me it's the most exhilarating relationship I could possibly ask for between myself and a machine. Understand and accept this and you'll be happier with the car.
