All I know is that Mazda tried all sorts of spark plug configurations and settled with the best in the end. Thats a little sketchy. I'd like to see what the differences will be. Very pretty too, nice job

I'll give you guys a hint by showing the following pictures of another 4-plug per rotor (4PPR) engine. Look at the pairing of the wires to the coils and you may understand the real purpose of the other plugs. That's probably too much of a hint...
These other pictures are just to show off the rest of that engine, which was pretty cool all the way around. We did this one about 7 or 8 years ago.

well i have o idea what the hell is really going on here but my geuss is they are not spack plugs, due too the configeration fo the extra "black tipped" things they also have a different type of end i've never seen, so i have no idea what kind thing they would be used for, but my geuss is they are not plugs, but i'm most likly wrong, in such a case it just goes to show how i can't guess everything :P

Okay, here's the real answer: They are not "spark" plugs but ignition grounds for the "wasted spark" setup. If you will notice, the coils have two high-tension terminals each; 4 coils, 8 terminals. Each coil handles only one spark plug, so the wasted spark is simply run to the engine and grounded there.
It would be a bad idea to put actual spark plugs in that location anyway. First, there is a tension bolt in the way and, second, it's just a very bad spot to allow the leading chamber to communicate with the trailing chamber through the plug holes.
Those are just small motorcycle plugs that terminate just inside the tension bolt hole. Sorry to dissapoint anyone, if you had grand ideas of the purpose. It does look really cool...eye candy, if you will.

Well considering those look like the plugs used in the Formula SAE car, I would assume their not rx7 plugs at all. Infact that looks almost like a wasted spark setup, with the plugs as a ground.
What ecu was this used with? Our motec, since it was a 4cyl used all 4, but this is an interesting setup.
I hope there not real, thats a horrible place for the plugs.

The EM that I'm using is a Electromotive TEC3R, with their high output coil packs.
Just like Blake said, the coils have a "waste spark" that needs to be grounded. So why not make some interesting looking grounds.
Props to Rob at Pineapple, thanks for all your help and I'm looking forward to getting alittle more fun out of this motor. I'll post the pics of the motor complete with all the components mounted that are powder coated too.
List of mods done:
Large street port
3mm 2pc ceramic grey premium apex seals
Cermet A rotor housings(thanks Rob)
Stage 3 oil mods
Alum sump and oil pan
with a little "eye candy"
Car
1995 VR FD
TEC3R(with their high output coil packs)
T-78 turbo
monster v-mount
3 1/2" down pipe
Apex GT exhaust

Hey I menchioned wasted spark first. Show me some love.
Anyways, I'm a little clueless when it comes to tuning. What's the advantage of this set-up?

Until someone guesses right, my official position is that we re-wired the engine for 220V power.

isn't that just bassically glorified nology hot wires? it's the same concept of grounding the unused spark. but that just burns up coils. i'd be a little skepitcal unless blake can back it up. the engine looks stunning though.
