egr sensor error code
#3
Hey Snake,
If you are getting an EGR code, you obviously have a California car. If you want to keep the car stock, I would suggest replacing the EGR valve ($109.85 from Mazda Comp. Parts). However, if you want to do the "cheap and dirty" fix, do a search for "cheap EGR fix" and you will find a post by SpooledUp7. He found a way to use a relay to fool the ECU so the code will go away.
Good luck!

Funny...the car was bought new at an Atlanta dealership. I guess they could have slipped a Cali car over here, we are talking about Mazda.
To keep any weird **** from happening I'll just clean it or replace it.
If it were a non-Cali car what would be different about it.
Thanks for the info....later

One other thing, is there any danger in running the car with the sensor error because I can't afford to have it down. Lucky me, my 300 turbo starter went out the weekend before I brought the 7 back to life...what next.

I shouldn't hurt for the EGR code to show up. I think it usually means that the EGR valve is not sending a proper signal to the ECU, but it does not necessarily mean that it is not working properly. I have heard of plugged up EGR valves catching on fire, but probably not commonly. Keep in mind that they are just an emmissions thing to reduce hydrocarbons. Most folks with non-Cali car remove them and install a block-off plate.
All 93' models have an EGR valve, but only CA cars have a sensor that tells the computer what position it is in. I have heard the heat from the turbo's will cook the electrical connections and cause bad signal to the ECU, causing the "Check Engine Light."
I wouldn't stress about it too much, but you should get it replaced eventually so you don't mistake another problems for an EGR code.
Good luck.
