Ebay downpipe, good idea or.........?

Here is the downpipe i was interested in buying:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2442339063

I have spoken with a guy by the name James@Meghan racing who are selling this downpipe. I asked and he said that this is a downpipe and MP combo, and that the two O2 sensors plug into the downpipe. He also says that the flanges are made out of stainless steel although i find that hard to believe, especially for the price. I specifically asked him if there were any fitment issues he was aware of and he said "no".

Looking at this downpipe, can anyone think of any other things that may be of concern to me? Does it look like it may be a decent economical replacement for my factory downpipe? My car is bone stock, and this downpipe would be my only mod. I WOULD NOT, I REPEAT NOT BE USING THE MIDPIPE. I would of course use my factory main catalytic converter with this downpipe. Suggestions and comments are desired. Thank you.

Exactly what i was wondering. He claims there is a second O2 sensor down by the cat or one that threads into the main cat, and that with the downpipe you thread THAT O2 sensor into the downpipe he supplys.

Do you guys think i should purchase this downpipe? The only reason why i'm even considering this downpipe is because it's cheap, and somewhere in the future i may decide to go single turbo, thus eliminating the use for THIS downpipe.

It's cheap but i imagine it will fit like a cheap downpipe. I just don't want to purchase the DP only to find out it won't fit properly. All i'm looking for is a cheap replacement for my stock DP, nothing more.

You get what you pay for, man. Why buy a pipe from some ebay person when you can get an HKS pipe (not the best) for $200? You can get a full SS pipe from the rx7store or gotham racing for $250.

Well the whole point was to avoid the high cost usually associated with a SS DP. I had called RX7Store.net to inquire about their mild steel downpipe yesterday, but was told that the mild steel downpipe would not fit well with my STOCK catalytic converter. If on the other hand i was told that i would have absolutely no fitment issues with the mild steel dp from RX7 store.net, i would have bought it right then and there.

I do appreciate the comments though. I'm wondering if i should purchase this ebay downpipe, but figured i would seek the professional opinion of some FD owners on the forum first, to see what they had to say. Thanks.

Well...

I just bought the Rx-7 store DP and days after my purchase I spoke to Jason. He did mention that they had problems in past with fitment on that particular DP and directed the manufacturer to fix it. He hasn't heard of any problems since but the fix has not been confirmned. Once my DP arrives I will report back on the out come.

You know they have other DP's there. When I made my purchase I wasn't aware of the issues otherwise I would have bought the pettit. But we will soon see.

Oh yeah if the item sounds fishy in anyway, it probably stinks rally bad up close. I would stay away form that e-bay DP.

Well, I can't give you an answer on that DP, but I bought one just like this from this guy. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2443935742
I haven't received it yet, will be here Fri. So I can't even tell you anything about it. All I can say is, you are not the only one looking to ebay to save some money on a SS DP. It is not rcoket science. They are mandrell bent and tig welded. The 350 price range is rediculous from Pettit and others. I'll take my chances.

That is a good price. RVM sells that same exact downpipe on their website listed as $209.00, which is still a good price. Please let us know how the fitment is though, and any other issues you may experience with the RVM dp.

I agree that some of the prices these companies charge for their midpipes and downpipes is insane though. Goodluck with your downpipe.

Yes you bought a RVM pipe. Their website is www.rvmracing.com

I have heard good and bad things about RVM, so i think you may have to draw your own conclusions.

Thank you for letting us know. Would you recommend this downpipe to others in terms of fit and finish? TIA.

if you are going to pay for $175 plus shipping thats roughly over $200, might as well save up a little more and buy the real deal from HKS $250 around I think.

Hey I've purchased my stainless steel downpipe off Ebay back in March. I didn't have any problems with installation. So far the finish is a little tarnished but, my downpipe does what it was designed to do. So I'm happy! If you are still unsure, let the sellers feedback speak for itself.

Darril...

I recommend getting a mild steel downpipe. I paid something like 199 a while back. If you get a stainless its going to set off some flags at the emissions station.

bought mine almost 2 years ago no problems.

I bought a similar generic SS downpipe. Had a few fitment issues (read about it here ). No major problems though. It was worth saving the money.

I have been considering the M2 DP. It retails for about 300 but from what I can tell the fit is the best out there. Anyone have any experience w/ the M2?

Worth the money?

I cannot take this advice, as i'm unsure if that is really you Zerobanger!

On a more serious note, in the name of stealth i have made my final decision on a downpipe, and it will not be a stainless unit, but rather a gun metal grey powdercoated mild steel unit. I do have a race coming up with a highly modified S2000 within the next couple of weeks or so, and i do not want him to readily see the downpipe on the car. Everything else on the car is stock and should appear stock to him. He is not very knowledgable when it comes to FDs, so i think i'm in the clear.

I will post the results in the kill section afterwards, but here are some of the details.

S2000 with cam gears, cams, stand alone, header, Mugen radiator (LMAO) and Mugen Ti exhaust with hollowed out cats. He claims his car runs mid to low 13s all motor, however it has been confirmed that he ran a 13.4@105 while spraying a 75 shot on top of all the other mods i mentioned above. Theoretically, he should be able to beat me handily.

However, i must have wound up with a freak FD from the factory because my bone stock CYM ran consecutive back to back 13.5@105 passes. When i was still living in NY last summer i put a downpipe on the car and ran two consecutive 13.2@106mph passes(this was when i realized i had a boost problem). When i moved to NC, i removed the DP and sold it because people spooked me about the emissions testing and i honestly didn't think my car would pass emissions with the DP on.

As long as he doesn't spray, i stand a chance at out driving him. We will be racing at the track and either on street tires, DR's or slicks. I will give him choice of tires. I'm looking to trap 107mph with just the downpipe only.

I'll post results in the kills section after the race takes place (and possibly video to go along with it).

The downpipe i was referring to is not a ebay downpipe, but rather a downpipe that RX7Trix.com sells. I've been told that the downpipe fits very good. I don't know anything about the powdercoat. I would imagine it would bake itself off within 4 months time, however my car is lucky if it gets driven 1000 miles a year (still have 43kmi on it ) so i'm not sure how long the finish would last. Quite honestly i don't care, as long as the performance of the pipe is not hindered in any way. It seems like an economical choice for me as i may decide to go single turbo in the next 12-18 months from now.
