Downpipe / Ceramic paint-coating

Just wondering.........everyone seems to have downpipes, but hardly anyone seems to mention coating them with the ceramic paint........ I guess the idea is that it'll keep more heat in the pipe and less transferred to the engine compartment........

Any ideas on if this is a good investment and where you can even get this done anyway........?????............My DP will be SS so maybe that precludes doing this??........

Thanks in advance.........

David

Jet Hot Coating

$60 to coat the DP inside and outside with Jet Hot 2000, plus $ shipping to and from Pascagoula, Mississippi.

has anyone ever actually tested the difference in temps outside the DP with & without a coating? I wonder how much they really help.

That said, my DP is jet-hot coated - I just wonder if it's a waste of money or if it's actually good for anything.

Actually, this subject has been discussed a lot on the Forum. I went with Jet Hot 2000 on my DP as an additional step to reduce underhood temperatures.

The Jet Hot web site includes some technical data with claims about the temperature reduction:

http://www.jet-hot.com/jethot.pdf

Underhood temperatures are a real issue with FD3S, so I figured the $100 I paid for the Jet Hot 2000 was a good investment.

I decided not to go with a thermal wrap on my DP after reading reports about how the thermal wraps cause deterioration of the metal parts they cover.

$100 to have techline coatings Satin Black put on the outside of the pipe, and a double coat of MCSSF on the inside. The $100 included prep of the pipe (mine was used). Works great so far (about 2 months). See

http://www.techlinecoatings.com

for info & dealers.

Thanks.......... ARToWar..........great link and I just emailed the local dealer to see what he will charge me...........sounds like pretty much the same stuff......as JET HOT.................pretty impressive that this stuff reduces temps 200F 1 inch above the pipe............COOOOOOOOOOOOL...............what is the inside coating you mentioned, anyway............same stuff or different? and how did you pick that out.........?

Thanks,

David

has anyone used the internal engine coating in a rotary yet? seems that would help as much as the downpipe and with increased power.

Coating the internals of the engine would be bad wouldnt it? Everything would have to be ceramic wouldnt it? And that includes the apex seals if im right. I honestly dont know how this would affect and its a very good question that jeremy asked.. Be sweet if chrispeed could help us out here.

David, sorry but I lost track of this thread and just saw your questions tonight. The MCSSF is a dealer only coating. For some reason it's not listed on the techline website, but the shop I went to (in Camarillo, CA) had it in stock and recommended it for the inside of the pipe. He said it was the best coating they had for that application. It hasn't been long enough for me to evaluate long-term durability, but I'll probably have the pipe off at the start of next year to check it. I can say that the underhood temps over the turbo area seem to be a lot lower than with my precat installed.

coating metal is a great way to keep the heat from damaging sensitive parts on your car thats why the stock exuast comes with a heat sheild the heat shield doesnt retain the heat it actually absorbs the energy and the output energy of the sheild is reduced. what im getting at is whenever you use jet coat it acts as a thermal barrier and when something cant get out it usually multiplies so before you jet coat anything make sure whats under that coating is good quality....
