Shogun,
The RX-7 manual says to grease the large ball, and to put grease both inside and outside the small cup on the end of the shifter before installing, and also to fill the change control case with oil.
Dave,
On my '90 Miata I put grease on the shifter components but did not fill its casing with oil, and it has been good for years. The Miata manual does NOT specify grease at all, but just to fill the case with oil. So I guess I'm not being very consistent. I think my reasoning at that time was that if I chose to use grease and then put in oil, the oil would eventually dissolve the grease. On the RX-7 I decided to follow the manual exactly. My life is just a series of experiments... the results of which are usually inconclusive.
