Question Do any of you here Cryo-treat your brake rotors and/or pads?

While digging through the 3rd gen archives I came across this subject. I know maxcooper has used it in the past.....can anyone else share their experience?

Pineapple cryo treats the motor internals that they install.

I have a friend that works at a laboratory. Maybe I can use the liquid nitrogen and do the thing myself. So is the whole process just dipping the metal in liquid nitrogen or is there more?

I have not had it done, but I have seen it proven on iron discs used in racing. It's is a true improvement, but unless the car is heavily tracked I don't see the real need. It will never hurt though.

There is a process to cryo treating parts. Just dipping them in liquid nitrogen DOES NOT work.

Here is a good site on the cyrogenic process.

"Cryogenic Processing is not a simple dunk into liquid nitrogen."

I tihnk if you just dunked it into liqid nitrogen then it would make the parts very brittle. Unless im mistaken. Anyone see demolition man??

No, but I've seen an apple dunked in liquid nitrogen, then hit with a sledghammer.

I have had both Brembos and Powerslots cryo-treated locally for my FD and my SVT Contour and had no warping probs with either set. I found a guy who treats high-wear parts for bus companies, punches and bits for machine tool shops, etc., and he'll do a set of brake rotors for $50 for me.

The FD set were tracked for 2 years with Hawk Black and then KFP pads, and rotor wear (especially the Brembo fronts) has been good, altho I can't give you any comparitive data for non-cryo'd rotors.

On the Contour I'm using a Mintex C-Tech track/street pad, which is a fairly agressive ferro-carbon pad, and the Powerslots are wearing faster than the Brembos on the FD did (I drive about 40 miles of stop-go daily), but the rotors are staying true after nearly a year of daily workouts.

The cryo tempering process uses liquid nitrogen followed by a heat tempering cycle, but you don't dunk the parts in the nitrogen. They're cooled down very slowly in a special machine.

What about cryo treating tranny internals? Anyone done that? Specifically the 5th gear synchro Actually, if it's not a huge expense, maybe it'd be worth it to cryo all of the replaceable internals on a tranny when going for a rebuild.

Thoughts?
