Daily Driver
I know this has been asked and I coulda shoulda searched, just didn't want to go through the pain of digging.
I know that the Rx-7 is not the best daily driver in the world.
However, my question is, is it safe to assume that a rebuilt or low miles stock with the standard reliability mods, would be a decent daily driver if it isn't pushed hard. When I mean a decent daily driver, I mean I wont need to dump like a few hundred every month just to keep it running. Also I can handle basic DIY type jobs, would I really need to dump a few grand a year just to keep it alive?
Just to add to the newbie questions, what do they exactly do with rebuilt engines, take apart bore it and replace seals and put it back?
Flame at my newbie'ness if you want.

Seems obvious to me you can't afford this car if it isn't perfect, which will never happen. And even if it did, you claim it won't be pushed, which would make it not worth buying this car. Find something else.

I speak Japanglish
I've been using my 93 rx7 as a daily driving car for 2yrs. Its be reliable and fun to commute, but because of the expense for gas and the milege that I have been adding on to my rx7, I've recently bought a 1989 240sx for daily beater.

But yea I would do what the person did above ^ however, I planned to get the 240sx before the RX, but I changed my mind.
Actually I'd prefer if someone would just lie to me then and tell me it won't cost me an arm and a leg. It's just that the RX-7 has been my dream car for 6 years...even if It did cost me an arm and a leg I'd get it, I'd just like a ball park guess on how long it would take til I would need to sell my soul to keep it running. Humor me.

i've owned my FD for a bit over 9 months... i would just like to say that within that time period, i have become addicted to rx7club.com along with all other rotary vendor sites, addicted to deciphering the damn sequential setup, addicted to see what next mod i can do to my 7 and countless other traumatic "stuff" that comes along owning a FD (i consider myself a do-it-yourselfer that takes pride in workmanship - so this makes it worst).
it's not the car that's the problem... it's the addiction to the 7 that will consume you!!! it drives me mad i say - MAD!!!

ok, lets look at this in a very straight forward way:
answer the following questions;
1. do you want one of the best looking cars on the road, and THE best Japanese supercar?
2. are you ok with the fact that things can go wrong at anytime with that car?
3. are you ok with the fact that unless you know how to fix them yourself, repairs will probably be expensive?
4. do you acknowledge the fact that RX7Club and it/s members are gods of good advice and may be the only ones that can help you when something craps out?
if the answer to any of those is no... buy something else.
i answered yes to all of them, picked up my 7, and it blew the engine 6 days later (116,000km)... but i knew the risks when i got into it... almost 12 months later it will go back on the road soon.
it's a bitch, but as the last post says, the addiction to the 7 is the problem... just so long as you know what you are in for.

Thanks for all the input. Seems to be just an overall gamble. O well, it's worth the risk, pain and money.

NYC's Loudest FD
I tend to disagree with everyone's assumption that an FD is not a good daily driver(within reason I'm single, have no kids, so I don't need the space, and I'm ok with that), it's all about maintenance. If you have a modified car, the proper equipment and tuning must go along with it. I used my car everyday up until 2 months ago it was my only car I bought something AWD for the winter. My car saw 18-19psi spurts of boost daily on pump gas with no issues for about 2 years now, it's more of how you PREPARE and TUNE your car to run properly. If I lived in a warm climate my FD would probably be my only car, unfortunately living here in NY, the winter snow, ice, and salt aren't good for my car, therefore I don't drive it during the winter months anymore. Boostn7 will attest to this as well, but he's a bigger nut than me cause we're in the dead of winter presently and he's STILL driving his car everday!

You'll always want more............you'll always want to go faster and a 7's potential is somewhat related to how deep your pockets are. your upgrade options are endless.
my advise...have a beater around. even if it is not your daily driver you can use it when your seven is down or getting upgraded

Yeah, I agree
I bought my rx7 with a brand new motor (<1000 miles when I bought it) and the only problems Ive been having were ones I knew about or ones I caused (sliding into a curb... ouch)
The car is 12 years old though - it has quirks that any old car does, sounds rattles, odd things like that. I daily drive mine (although thats only a couple miles) and don't have any problems. Gas is expensive, oil is expensive, the time it takes for warm up is annoying, the fact that there are some driveways I cant go down is also annoying, and I'm getting a cult following just for owning this car which is wierd but cool.
I would say the car CAN be a daily driver, if you get a good rebuild it won't have engine problems (rather, not as many or as often) but you will be spending a lot more on oil and gas than with a honda civic. I get like 10 mpg driving in the city - but thats because I have what the doctor has called a "leadfoot" - and im running so rich that its causing neighborhood animals to choke.

I'm with him. And watch out for those followers. All types of people WILL be attracted to the car. Some will approach to ask "hey, huh huh - is that one of them rotary engines?"

Yes, boring is required for the rotors.
You will not need a few grand per year but $10K per year.
You will have to change tires every month.
You will have to change turbos every 3 months or before 3,000 miles.
You need to SEARCH you lazy bum!!!! If you're asking these questions, you really didn't search.

Bro, just drive the car. The car was meant to be driven. With ANY car there will be problems, just going to have to fix them. The FD is more likely to get these problems, if not taken care of and abused. Personally I would think any motor with low miles, perfect compression, and was never overheated would be the motor to look at.
P.S. Reliablility mods are a MUST!

oneflytrini is right with reliability mods. Also, there are many FD owners that use their cars as DD. Your car will last with reliability mods and proper maintainance. I aslo hope you know chillin_rx7 is joking.
