coolant level

coolant level
have checked my coolant recently and my level seems to sit about 1.5-2 inches below the filler
neck no matter how many times i fill it up to the top.have undone ast to make fluid rise in
there and then refill main filler to brim but still seems to settle at about 1in below filler neck..is
this ok dont have any leaks or gurgling..also when engine is hot takes a long time ie about 2
hours before i can safely remove the center filler cap without getting coolant coming out.no
water flowing or overflowing from expansion tank.start car with filler cap off no bubbles and no
eruption water slowly rises at which point replace cap..next time i look even though i have
filled it up the level is again 1.5-2in down from the neck.is the coolant level meant to be up to
the top of filler neck and stay there or is it meant to settle lower down in the tank

Coolant will expand and contract. When your car cools off to the ambient temperature the coolant system will be under a slight vacuum because as it cools it will pull coolant from the overflow tank. When you take the filler cap off you release the vacuum and the coolant level will drop a couple of inches so what you're seeing is perfectly normal.

You may have some air in your system, which is difficult to remove with your method. Next time you go to fill it, remove the throttle body coolant line first. This will allow air to escape. Be sure to replace the line when you are done, or when coolant starts to flow out of it.

check all your other fluids to make sure they are not mixing ( im not saying you have a leak just look at your oil and trans if possible) if not then it could be a coolant hose expanding just like mgoddard1 said

My coolant level sits in the same location, a few inches down from the top of the filler cap. I went through a phase of adding a dash every morning, but the next morning it was always back a few inches down. So I gave up and have been driving it for 2 or 3 months like that with no problems. Temps never get over 210F, and I'm not losing any coolant.

some auto cars have the trans cooler in the rad. if the trans cooler ruptures coolant can get in it or vice versa
