Unhappy Coolant leak on the freeway

I just got home a little while ago. I was cruising on the freeway at 65mph tonight and all of a sudden my low coolant warning buzzer came on. I immediately looked at me PFC commander and saw my temps started to rise. I looked for a place to pull over right away to shut the engine. This took about 30 seconds. By the time I got to the exit shoulder and shut my engine I was at 104c. I left the fans on until the temps dropped back down. I went outside to check for a coolant leak and sure enough there was plenty of coolant leaking toward the passenger side. I called a tow truck and had to wait over an hour and a half. This really pisses me off because I recently upgraded to Samco radiator hoses and t bolt clamps. Then again, I did not get a chance to check where the leak is coming from yet. Hopefully this is a simple fix.

How would I know if my engine over heated to the point that I need a rebuild?

If you shut down at 104C, you should be fine.

104C is hotter than we would all like but it isn't overheating. That's how hot these cars run from the factory. With the A/C off the fans don't even come on until 105C.

You should only need a rebuild if the coolant gaskets were affected, which shouldn't happen at 104. If you want some peace of mind get a coolant pressure tester and test for leaks.

I just got my FD back from the shop and thankfully the engine did not overheat and no rebuild necessary Thank you Mazda engineers for the low coolant buzzer! A small coolant hose close to the firewall, kinda under the intake manifold split. I wonder what that hose was for, maybe the heater core? I wish they made a silicone version for that piece.

It wasn't the throttle body. It was a hose that sits lower. The oem hoses seem pretty crappy. A few months ago my radiator hose burst as well - the reason why I upgraded to Samco silicone.

You would be surprised. The OEM hoses actually work quite well for the heat that they see. The problem is that nearly 2 decades of turbo rotary temps will make any hose brittle. Unfortunately if the hoses haven't been replaced then things like this are bound happen.

The oem radiator hoses I had on were almost new with about 2,500 miles on them plus my temps never go over 86c. When I came home on that day I decided to pop the hood and the upper radiator hose burst right in front of me. I guess I was lucky, since this happened with the engine off and on my driveway.

yea, same hose JUST happened to me en route to sevenstock, is it a custom bent hose or will any hose of the same diameter work?

Evans NPG+ zero-pressure coolant FTW, never have to worry again about issues like this
