Companion Flange Balencer Weight (Manual)

My neighbor noticed that the 'weight' on the manual tranny companion flange spins freely and that it may be a problem. I saw it could rotate but since the FSM mentioned nothing of it I didnt worry. He mentioned that it could vibrate and shake, possibly even sheering off a driveshaft bolt. I was looking for clarification of this and if the 'play' is normal for the weight.

Here is a pic, the object in question is what my two fingers are on:

Here is a clip of the rotation: (3.2mb)

My assumption is that when the bolts are in place they wont allow for much movement but he said that it could still pose a problem.

Thanks,
~Kris

You need a new companion flange. That piece that you rotated is a press fit and has worked loose somehow. It appears to balance the assembly. I have one in front of me now that I am looking at it and can see how it's made.

My suggestion - Don't drive the car any further until it's replaced or you could risk a serious vibration to the rear differential.
