in the cabin or in the engine bay? turning the key to full ON without starting still runs the fuel pump so if you have a leak you'll dump some fuel out...has your car had the fuel line/pulsation dampner recall done?

If the car never had the recall done, id suspect that as a prime candidate for whats causing the smell, you should get it to a dealer to get that fixed or DIY cuz it can lead to the old engine fire o doom.

Is your clutch working (ie, can you put the car through the gears)? If it's working, don't mess with it (IMO). If it's not working, well.....

The collar should be anchored in the pressure plate and extented onto the collar. It should never be flat against the pressure plate for operation (or else the throw-out bearing can/will pop out). Pushing the collar into the pressure plate is what allows the throw-out bearing to be unattached (for dropping the tranny).
