clutch noise
I have a question about this because it has been like this since i bought the car.
She has a Centerforce dual fritction and when at idle not moving with the pedal out there is a noise, high pitched and does not change with some throttle. When i put the pedal in the noise stops, help?

This sound is symptomatic of both a bad throwout bearing and a bad transmission. I know, I've experienced both. From your description, my guess is the former, however, if the sound is a steady "whirring", creaking kind of noise, it's your transmission. Hard to tell without being able to hear the noise. One thing I'll agree with "clayne" on though, start crying, it's not a cheap job either way.

Clayne is actually right this time. I took my FD in for a rebuild which I was quoted 1250. When my car was in neutral it made a sound like "Chuga chuga chuga chuga" Almost like a train. Depress the clutch, goes away. It got louder and louder. Eventually you will hear it when you are driving.
So I decided to get my tranny rebuilt, but the input shaft is a $700 part and is not part of the normal transmission rebuild. So that would have made it a $2000 rebuild, I went with a new OEM Mazda transmission instead.
Keep in mind that some noise is not abnormal. My 04 Rx-8 makes a noise similar to that, as does my new transmission I got from mazda for my RX-7. The difference is its very, very light and you really have to listen to it to know its there.

Throwout bearing has load on it when the clutch is disengaged (i.e. pedal IN). It's not going to make noise when the car is in neutral, clutch engaged.
Pilot bearing *could* be the cause, but it's about a 5% possibility. The other more likely 95% possibility is the bearings on the input shaft of the transmission. They are under load when the clutch is engaged (pedal out).
If you depress the clutch and you hear the sound die off almost like a rotating part slowing down (like a bearing spinning down), it's the transmission.
This is typically caused by trashed 3rd and 5th gear synchros dumping metal into the transmission oil supply.
Don't spend 2000$ on this. It will cost you at most 400-600$ for a decent used transmission without trashed synchros OR time and labor to research and do it yourself.

Mine has that noise when the clutch is out in neutral. When the clutch is in the noise slows down then you cant hear that spinning metal sound. That was in NEUTRAL. In ANY gear even with the clutch in or out it still makes that noise.
As I said it only stops when in neutral with clutch engaged(in). I always thought it was a throw out bearing too! But damn could be worse huh!
So what parts will i need to stops this?? Should i just rebuild the tranny or get a second hand one??
One more question. Will this problem get worse if I don't fix it soon??

my pilot bearing was bad. Had I got it fixed early it could have just been a rebuilt. since I waited the input shaft was eaten. Thats a $700 part alone.
I went with a new OEM transmission.

just saw this thread and it got me thinking ,
i purchased a used transmission for my manual swap. it had less than 90xxxkm but sat dry and unused for over a year. i used brand new OEM mazda parts , to go along with the used transmission, new pilot bearing and seal, new throw out bearing , fork sprung back and worked fine, new collar and ring as well. used parts were the transmission clutch and pressure plate.
if you match the cars speed and revs while going down the highway the sound goes away. the rest of the time its almost like a metal scraping sounds but very light sounding , im pretty sure its just when the car is in gear under load , while in neutral its doesnt make the sound.
from reading this thread im assuming its my imput shaft? or could it just be some bad syncro or a gear that just needs rebuilding. also prior to driving i put fresh synthetic lucas oil in it and when finally driving not one gear grinds or slips.
any suggestions would be great
thanks

easiest way is to basically grab the input shaft and give it a good shake to see what kind of play it has... my old tranny was obviously bad compared to the new one i put in.... also spinning the input shaft made a lot more noise comparing to the new as well. the new one still made noise so dont go by this alone.
hope this is somewhat helpfull

My trans is making a fair bit of noise. When I press in the clutch at idle it shuts right up. And she wines in gear till about 3k rpm when I can't hear over the engine. I can put a video on my build thread if that helps.
