CA classic car registration?? anyone??

hey guys im in the process of trying to figure out my options for smog issues, and came across the idea getting it registard as a classic car. i heard that it has to be 15 years old and a limit of 3000 miles per year and you dont have to smog it. if thats the case how do they regulate how many miles you actually drive. i tried to search this topic but didnt find anything, maybe because im still not sure how to use the forum to the fullest yet, but can someone edumacate me on this? thanks guys

there are regional forums for these geographic specific questions. PM Wackyracer he'd know as he drives an RX-3 smog exempt.

Pre '75 cars are smog exempt in California. There is no 15 year rule.

You cannot make a newer car smog exempt by dicking around with insurance.

There used to be a 30 year rolling exemption for cars in CA, but that all changed with Assembly Bill 2683, which the Governator signed in 2004. So, any car that is 1976 or newer must continue to get and pass smog checks every 2 years.

in AZ you can register a 15+ year old and insure as a collectors car with mileage limits and a few other restrictions, but don't need smog. I have never heard of a similar program in California.
