So many....odd....things about this though. As others have said...WHY park it there to try and sell? These cars have a fanatical nearly cult-like following, their rarity makes them very desirable. Seems an odd way to advertise it, unless of course he has ads in publications we don't know about.
Secondly, a lot of work has gone into this car, it was owned by an enthusiast. Decent mods, yet not overly flashy. Low mile reman. Took the time to paint it up really nice. Why sell it now?
Why did the original engine only last 38K miles, I wonder?
Summary: The owner suspects something is going south with the engine. He is NOT driving it because of this also.
My opinion, of course.
Still, I would jump on it if it passes an inspection by a shop knowledgeable with rotary engines.
Side note...were there Touring models or PEP models that had the wiper but no rear wing?

Sorry I haven’t posted in a couple of days, just been really busy with Christmas coming and everything. I am probably going to be calling later this evening to set up an appointment tomorrow (Sunday, December 23rd) to see the car with the owner, have it started, and then possibly take it to a rotary shop, or someone reputable in the area that specializes in RX7's/rotaries. I am going to be nailing down the funds today so everything can go smoothly if I decide to buy the car. Just 2 more things..
1. I thought 14k was already a good price. Assuming basically everything major checks out okay, runs and drives smooth, what do you guys think I should offer him (I've never been big on low balling, however I want to save myself as much money as possible)?
2. I am going to post in the NE region, but since I already have a thread going here I figured it won't hurt to ask if anyone from South Jersey knew of a CLOSE shop or knowledgeable person I could go too to have the car checked out real quick. I really don't want to travel anymore than 15-20 minutes with the car to the shop. I know there is JPR Imports somewhere in south jersey, but I don't know where relative to the car's location (If you know south jersey the car is about 5 minutes away from cherry hill east high school). Any idea's?
Once again thanks for all the help and opinions.

Guys, know of any good rotary shops in the south jersey area that's reputable? If CR's gotta take it to a shop, might as well be someone who know what an RX7 is. Anyone know a mech that can diagnose a RX7 compression test in south jersey?
Also, CR, $14,000 is a good price if the car's in good mechanical condition. Also keep in mind, a black interior is something that is sought after in the FD world, so if the interior is in good shape, and the car's in good shape, it's a good deal.
This might sound stupid, but check every button inside the car, every feature, even the stupid stuff, make sure everything works.
Did the seller also say he's got a computer on the car? Can you get a complete list of all the aftermaket pieces/mods on the car and post it? I'd like to take a look at that list cause if you ask any of the "seasoned" guys on here (I'm not there yet, but unfortunately getting there fast), there is a right order to mod the car in, and a wrong order to mod the car in. If you list the current mods on the car, it will give a btter idea as to what's missing for peace of mind (like, for example, you have an intake, and exhaust, and other components which will add more air to the car, but nothing to add more fuel, this is all sorts of bad on an FD).
It sounds like a good deal though. Since he said it's got a computer, a couple things to look for:
Any of these artermarket pieces on the car? And if so, what type?
Intake
Pre-Cat/Downpipe
Main Cat/High-Flow Cat/Midpipe (If it has a midpipe, were the turbo waste gates ported?)
Catback
Turbos new (does it still have stock turbos, 99 spec, or single turbo?)
When did he get the engine rebuilt? By who?
What type of computer running the car?
Radiator?
AST (Air Separator Tank)?
Injectors?
Fuel Pump?
Anyone else think of anything?

Especially since it doesn't have plates:
Jot down the VIN (base of windshield in front of driver) and get a Carfax report on its history.
Take into account that the car may not currently be registered, insured, or inspected. Some states make the buyer pay up on any unpaid fines for past registration/insurance problems, and you'll definitely have to pass inspection.

Yes this is correct. I'm trying to find someone that already has a carfax this way I don't have to buy one, but it's not looking to bright at this point. Not a big deal.
Okay I didn't realize this, I rubbed my fingers on the rotors and nothing came off so I assumed it to be more than surface rust. Thanks.
The black interior is basically perfect..a few creases on the drivers side seat and that's about it.
I'm really psyched, I think that if the carfax checks out okay and then a compression test checks out okay, it's a done deal. A couple more days I assume. I have to get the carfax and then I have to get in touch with the owner for the second time. Thanks for all your all your input guys. Any suggestions on what I should offer?

Well, you can do the whole Blue Book thing and try to go in and offer a low-ball number, but you stated earlier you were opposed to that and I agree.
The proper thing to do in these cases is to say, "Is the price negotiable?" and see what the response is. When I have sold cars, sometimes I am firm on the price, sometimes I set a price I am willing to come down on. Sometimes I will come down a LOT, you know? If you ask this, the owner is likely to come back with a "Oh, I dunno...what have you got in mind?" THIS is the dangerous point, because if he is asking $14K but would take maybe $12.5K, but you offer say...$10K, he might say, "Well, I guess this is a waste of time...". IF this happens you do have some options, you can obviously just tell the truth and say, "Hey man...I certainly didn't mean to offend you, but I am trying to budget for the car and then some incidental other expenses I may have, so...I just thought I'd ASK!"
And then the negotiations can continue from there.

5 owners in 14 years. Hmmmm. Auctioned off in '99...that is a bit odd but...okay.
Last owner for 7 years, just as he claimed.
Once again, if a compression test is good and the rest of the engine/drivetrain is good/average, then I would go for it.

make sure to call the mazda customer support. to see if any recall on the vehicle. and to make sure about what this car have. every deal. THey will tell you everything about the car if there is any recall on it.
18002225500. that is the number. tell them the vin# and they will tell you about the vehicle.
KEEP IN MIND. take ur time when you check out the vehicle. cause if anything wrong with the car ( if the owner did not clam or anything to insurance or....) it will not show on the carfax.

Alright so it's Christmas eve and I just got back from looking at the car with the owner (Dave). He is a very nice older man and his wife wants him to sell the car. He said he bought the car from a dealer in my area with a blown motor (not knowing it was blown) he replaced the motor, and has only put 5k miles on it over 7 years. He said he has no idea why the carfax would say it had 5 owners, however he said the only reason he could think of was because the car dealership goes to PA to buy their sports cars, brings them here and sell them.
Anyway, I went to look at the car and it is beautiful. very very clean. runs well, started right up. The only thing was that the heat shield rattled a bit as the car was revving down. He claimed it's no big deal to tighten it up. Also he said that the compression on the new engine was great there was no need to spend money on a compression test, but if we wanted too we were more than welcome.
So the last step of this is to get in touch with Jim at JPR (probably Wednesday morning) and get this car checked out real quick. If it checks out, it's mine!
Just wanted to thank all you guys for your help, I greatly appreciate it, and I hope to be a part of this community by the end of the week. I'll def. keep all you guys updated. Thanks!
