it is a debris catcher for the manifold and evaporated fuel.
as u can see there is a tube that goes to a small canister uner the elbow.then it tubes to a bigger canister(the one u speal of).this also has an evaporation to connected to it from the tank.
it has two jobs it performs.one it filters dirt dust from the manifold and even oil.it also filters out the heavy grime in which is too heavy in stay constant in the evaporation gases that can escape into the intake manifold.like now i can shake the first canister under tha manifold and hear it rattle from all the crap in it.

twint78 - Is it possible you are describing the _catch tank_ ?? That is under the manifold.
redTT - It looks to me that the attached picture is of the top of the gas tank. The device on it is probably the fuel _seperator_. I think it takes vapors from the top of the tank (see the two pipes) and seterates out what fuel it can (drains back into the tank, same pipes) before sending the vapor to the charcoal canister that you are asking about, which is not in the picture.
The canister really looks like a canister. It sits on the other side of the driveline from the fuel filter. The canister takes one line from the seperator, and then vents to atmosphere. It is the last cleanup on diplaced or expanded air from the tank.

the charcoal canister looks like a big black campbell's soup can. you can see it from the rear driver's side of the car, that is from the underside of the car. it is up on the side of the tank in that gap...

Er, Twint78 - now I'm going from memory, but I think you might be wrong. The Charcole Canister only has one line into it and one line out. The line it comes from the seperator (attached to the gas tank). The line out goes to atmosphere. The Charcole Canister filters vapors.
The Catch Tank ultimateley feeds back into the manifold, doesn't it? I also thought the catch tank held fuel, and not vapor.
Am I completeley wrong? I'm pretty sure there isn't a line from the catch tank under the manifold all the way back to the canister, next to the diff.
