Center speaker removal
I have a high pitched buzz in my center dash speaker. I want to inspect and probably replace it.
Does the grill just pop off, or do I have to get at it from underneith the dash?
Just thought I'd ask before prying at it.
Thanks

Extra precaution will have to be taken when "beating the **** out of it with a hammer" as 95R2-89TII Ground Zero has advised. There is minimal clearance between the center speaker and the windshield,... therefore, DO NOT swing the Hammer too high or you'll shatter your windshield.
Good Luck.

Here was mine after taking it out a few months ago...
I third the hammer idea. Just don't do what I did, I swung it up way too high and forgot that we have windsheilds.

Use a phillips tipped "bit" adatable to a 1/4 short socket along with a 1/4 drive racthet. It's a much, much easier to way to remove the screws.

Given the subtle effects of the center speaker, especially in a car like the FD, I usually wonder why anyone would bother.
As to the center speaker not being of any use, I would have to disagree. It does fill in the highs that are missing when there is no center speaker. As to the cost/trouble of replacing it, that would be up to the user's wallet. I only had to replace a center speaker and the door speakers which ended up being less than $150 for a sound system that exceeds my needs.
If I were to get an aftermarket system, I would be paying a lot more than $150.

The center speaker doesn't produce much in the way of high frequencies, it's a 3-1/2 cone driver. The tweeters in the door speakers are responsible for producing the high frequencies. The center speaker simply adds a little midrange fill to elevate the soundstage. It's not a very obvious effect, at least with an 11-year old OEM system like I have, and I don't miss it at all. It has almost zero effect on the frequency response of the system (which is pretty damn poor to begin with). Then again, I rarely listen to the radio in the car.

Ex fd *****
The center speaker is 4 ohms - Alpine makes a Ctr Speaker (model SPS 0519) that will fit w/ a home made adapter plate, It is much better quality than the stock one. It made a noticable improvement in my Bose system vs/ Not having one at all. Also A continuous Buzz or Screeech is most likley caused by a bad Amp - the ctr speaker has its own amp that is mounted under the dash next to the glove box.

If sticking with a factory-ish speaker system I would keep the center speaker. Once you go to top flite seperates with good crossovers that can actually image you can do without the center IMO.
