Question Center speaker removal

I have a high pitched buzz in my center dash speaker. I want to inspect and probably replace it.

Does the grill just pop off, or do I have to get at it from underneith the dash?

Just thought I'd ask before prying at it.

Thanks

Pries out, just wrap the screwdriver in tape so you don't scratch your dash. You can unplug it and pop it back in.

TIP:
Extra precaution will have to be taken when "beating the **** out of it with a hammer" as 95R2-89TII Ground Zero has advised. There is minimal clearance between the center speaker and the windshield,... therefore, DO NOT swing the Hammer too high or you'll shatter your windshield.

Good Luck.

You must remove the windshield first. The the center speaker can be reached and beat with a hammer.

What a PITA. I understand a new windshield seal can be ultra expensive. !!

Still cheaper than the whole windshield. We're trying to cut expenses here.

I second the hammer thing. Actually, my c/s was so old and brittle that it actually came out as dust.

Make sure you replace it with a gauge pod and boost/water gauges

Here was mine after taking it out a few months ago...

I third the hammer idea. Just don't do what I did, I swung it up way too high and forgot that we have windsheilds.

I just had the same problem, just used the screwdriver to pry up the cover, then you have to find a really short phillip's head screwdriver to take out the screws. real pain in the ***.

TIP:
Use a phillips tipped "bit" adatable to a 1/4 short socket along with a 1/4 drive racthet. It's a much, much easier to way to remove the screws.

Do you know what ohm load it is? could you stick any speaker in there without blowing up the bose amps?

All of the speakers in the Bose system run really low impedances (1-2 ohms). Almost any other speaker you drop in will be in the 3-5 ohm range. The result is that the speaker will most likely not be able to play as loud as with the Bose speaker. Given the subtle effects of the center speaker, especially in a car like the FD, I usually wonder why anyone would bother.

The Bose system the FD uses is 4ohms. (http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/stereo_upgrade.html)

As to the center speaker not being of any use, I would have to disagree. It does fill in the highs that are missing when there is no center speaker. As to the cost/trouble of replacing it, that would be up to the user's wallet. I only had to replace a center speaker and the door speakers which ended up being less than $150 for a sound system that exceeds my needs.

If I were to get an aftermarket system, I would be paying a lot more than $150.

The center may be 4 ohms, the others are 2 ohms or less.

The center speaker doesn't produce much in the way of high frequencies, it's a 3-1/2 cone driver. The tweeters in the door speakers are responsible for producing the high frequencies. The center speaker simply adds a little midrange fill to elevate the soundstage. It's not a very obvious effect, at least with an 11-year old OEM system like I have, and I don't miss it at all. It has almost zero effect on the frequency response of the system (which is pretty damn poor to begin with). Then again, I rarely listen to the radio in the car.

The center speaker is 4 ohms - Alpine makes a Ctr Speaker (model SPS 0519) that will fit w/ a home made adapter plate, It is much better quality than the stock one. It made a noticable improvement in my Bose system vs/ Not having one at all. Also A continuous Buzz or Screeech is most likley caused by a bad Amp - the ctr speaker has its own amp that is mounted under the dash next to the glove box.

If sticking with a factory-ish speaker system I would keep the center speaker. Once you go to top flite seperates with good crossovers that can actually image you can do without the center IMO.
