I don't think a skid plate would be a bad idea. something lightweight like sheet aluminum that is dual layer and gapped with foam in between. that would slow down an object considerably. Heck, it might even offer up undertray style aerodynamic advantages...? I don't know. I could just be talking out of my ****.

TRUST ME, you aren't the first to do so. We see it all too often within the "I'm not soo good at reading" 3rd gen community We answer questions asked 3 years ago, comment on someone's post from 4 years ago, and ask if parts are still available for sale from 5 years ago You point it out, smile (and often chuckle hehe), and move on

I don't know the details of how this happend....

How fast was he/she going?

Trust makes a cast aluminum pan for the 240sx guys. Pretty stout. But given the right circumstances, I've seen them bust apart.

my point of view is it can happen at any time driving on the street, had this been a stock oil pan and something that size hit it it may have survived without ripping a hole in the pan, or leaked at a fraction of the speed to save the motor. i just do not believe in cast aluminum pans for street related driving.

Pretty much anything made of cast aluminum can/will crack if severely impacted.

If you build it thick, it will take a huge impact, but still I'd prefer it to bend instead of crack.

Wrong oh buddy. The correct insurance coverage is:

Moving object: Comprehensive coverage
Stationary object: Collision coverage

You may think that a rock is covered under collision and animals are comprehensive but thats only because most rocks don't move and most animals do. However if it is a dead deer in the road or a rock bouncing off the back of a truck the opposite applies. This is a good thing to know when you call... all objects are moving and it "hit you", you did not "hit it".

I had a similar issue with a rock that hit my S80. The insurance agent was very curious as to if the rock fell out of the truck in front of me but DID NOT BOUNCE OFF THE HIGHWAY as opposed to one that came out, struck the pavement, and then hit my car. One way was covered under comprehensive, one way was covered under collision.

Wacky.

Unless you were really tailgating at high speed, it would be almost impossible for a rock to fall off the bed of a trailer and strike the car before the ground. It would need to fall from the roof of an enclosed trailer, I think.

I agree - strange question.

Im not 100% sure on this, but this is what i was told. It's my understanding that if an object hits the highway after exiting a moving vehichle, the car the object exits is no longer liable for the damages it causes. Im guessing this is why the agent asked you this.

I have had this oil pan for years and have not had a problem. I have even hit something large enough to take out my front spoiler. If I hit something my eyes dash over to my oil pressure guage with my hand on the key just in case, but so far so good.

Quit griping guys. Just be cautious.

Or they could have made it so it didn't sit below the crossmember. What's 10mm in depth of the oil pan mean to the quantity held? Was it designed so they could say it held a quart more and made the design to fit that criteria? If it sat even with the crossmember you wouldn't nut up and stare at the oil pressure guage when something went under your car like you say you do now. As had probably been mentioned before, speed bumps, pot holes could catch the front lip that sits below the crossmember....so far it hasn't since we've only heard of this extreme failure but still it would be even less likely to happen if it was just even with the cross member.
