a clogged cat will get extremely hot(glowing red) after driving. also it will affect top end power(high rpm). if you removed the air pump with the cat in place, the cat will burn up.

a clogged cat will also cause overheating because it acts as a restriction to the exhaust, which in turn causes poor performance because of the reduced flow

if i remeber correctly an old teacher of mine did a test on my cat for my old FC when i found it to be bad

we took it off the car, and he told me to get a hose and poor water through it, if the water comes out easy and the water out is pretty much the same as the water in, the cats good

but if the water seems to barely be coming out and gets "stuck", and if it seems like the water coming in is not coming out, then the cat is clogged

though i would ask someone else about this, since that teacher was a little quirky and a month later he was fired for doing a burnout in the parking lot with his truck, lol

just thought that might be helpful as a "last chance" thing

though, since its late and i just thought of this now, you could just remove it and swap with a test pipe and see if it goes away

It will also keep leaking from the downpipe-cat flange gasket no matter if you keep replacing it.

You do realize that with an airpump in place, the cat actually gets "hotter" to burn off the excess deposits?

To the OP, if you really think your cat is a problem, disconnect it and let the car idle (yes it will be loud, but it's a quick test that can be done). If your idle is fine, then it's your problem. If your idle still sucks, it's not the problem.

I've had a clogged cat. Two of them actually. The symptoms were different from what you described. I posted info about how to check for a clogged cat if you want to search for it.

Have you done a compression test?

What mods do you have?

Last time you changed plugs, wires, fuel filter?

My B2000 had a clogged cat, and it was literally as if the truck was being strangled....it had no power, no acceleration and generally ran like crap. But it DID start and idle just fine....

Holy **** this had nothing to do with me, or so I thought. This explains why my rear defrost light comes on and my exhaust is hella hot sometimes...!

Your symptoms do not fit with a clogged cat. Exhaust restriction, i.e., clogged cat, will cause a loss of power at higher RPM/power, but will not usually affect the idle.

Our cats are 15+ years old. They are not designed to last forever. A "clogged" cat generally means that the brick inside the cat is falling apart, and the broken pieces are restricting flow. One temporary solution would be to remove the broken prices from the cat. I removed my clogged cat, and tilted it on end to allow the broken pieces to come out. It took a while, and quite a bit of shaking, but I finally got all the loose stuff out. I have another cat in the car right now, so I have not reinstalled the old one yet. I feel pretty confident that the old cat will flow freely now. The down side is that my old cat will probably continue to fall apart, so that's why I refer to this as a temporary solution.

Thumbs up

the problem that i had was when it first happened so i didnt push the car or gassed it alot but after trying to do so it was very horrible acceleration if any , my theory is that the cat was so clogged that it affected the idle because the car got toooooo hot , my car gets idle sad when it gets really hot as im sure alot of rotaries do , so i changed my cat put in a 3 inch midpipe with a 2.25 restrictor plate for back preasure and runs like a dream a bit loud but runs amazing with no boost creep .
