CA Emissions / Smog Results

Initial Mods in signature...

First Test:

Removed Power FC, Pettit intake, and put the Bonez High-flow cat on.

Had CARB numbers for the HKS Twinpower and Greddy Intercooler.

Results: Fail

2nd Test:

New set of plugs, fresh oil change, and 2 gallons of denatured alcohol (8 gallons of premium in tank).

Results: Fail (but, close)

3rd Test:

Drove around corner and added an additional gallon of alcohol.

Results: Pass

Of course all of this is from my buddys rx-7, not mine.

denatured alcohol? I've never heard of using that to help the smog test. what does it do? Is it bad for your engine?

Was the carm warmed up really well before getting the tests done?

Denatured alcohol is a very clean burning fuel. They use it for camping stoves and lanterns. Its not good for rubber, but I don't think it will do much damage in a day.

It was VERY warm before all 3 tests...

Matt,

Is Coleman "white gas" denatured alcohol?

On your emissions tests, I noticed your biggest HC problem was at 15 mph. Just out of curiosity, how old is your O2 sensor?

I've never heard of "white gas", so I can't help you with that one.

The O2 sensor has about 5k miles on it...

The only thing illegal on the car was the downpipe... other than that everything had CARB numbers. Or at least evrything they can look at.

HEET and those smog check in a bottle cleaners all have alcohol to help passing the smog check. There is a vac chamber that you can blow clean that's supposed to help lowering the smog check too. Good to know that you passed.

i see....so the greddy i.c. has a CARB OK. you 'd think that as soon as they see that though, they'd start looking for stuff.....i guess it depends a lot on the tester's attitude/qualifications/mood.

not terribly objective.

while i'm generally all for emmissions control, it really pisses me off that despite a clean sniff test, you can be flunked on visuals. i mean, what exactly is the goal here.... cleaner air, or a bloated beauracracy that hassles the population??

i wish i had the energy/money to take CARB to court. heck if one guy can get the pledge of allegiance thrown out, you'd think we could straighten CARB out a bit.

sorry for the rant.....i'm going through a smogging nightmare as we speak and i'm a little irked.

congrats on passing.
