Buying a 7

Ok here is the basic run down. I love the Rx-8 but dont have the cash to get one at this time. I went a couple of days ago and test drove a 7 for the frist time and it was a very fun car to drive. i know that the 7 dose have some eng. problem can you guys tell me what to look for in a good 7?

the one that i am looking at right now has 91k miles needs a new core or something(he said that it would cost around 3000 to fix). he wants 9000 for the car it sounds like a good idea is it? let me know what you guys think.

thxs,
Stalin

and the 7 is bone stock

i think you should search the forum for your answers, because there are hundreds of threads asking the same question. Understand that, even though the 7 is an extremely fun car to drive, it does have ALOT of problems, that will cost more than 3000 to fix. Before you consider buying an RX7, you should learn about it first, and understand what you are getting yourself into. It takes a lot of work, and a lot of money to maintain these cars, and if you dont know what your doing, its going to take a lot out of you and your bank account.

Like i said earlier, search first, and you'll find your answers.

Then look at this site.

http://www.rx7.org/Robinette/index.htm

Look around it, and you'll find alot of useful information to begginers.

Good luck.

Oh, and prepare to get flamed.

If it needs new engine (referred to as the "core") I think you'll wait on it quite a bit. They are on backorder.

Other then that... read ^

And to add to the fact that it does need a new engine, if you can get a reman, its will probably cost more than 3000 to get it back in the car. You could save money by either pulling it and putting it yourself, which will be hard if you don't know too much about the car.....OR......you could have someone on the forum locally put it in for you, assuming they know what they are doing. Either way, good luck with this decision.

In the current situation I'd rather pick one with a reman (and possibly some reliability mods) already installed and pay that few grand extra...

^^ that'd be your best bet on getting a good FD, but still read and learn. It WILL come in handy.

honestly, if you don't have the money to buy an RX-8 you prob. don't have the money to keep a 7 on the road...nothing worse then having a car that sits in the garage for most of it's life...

Cheap / fast / reliable. You can only have two of the three. And the 3rd-Gen RX-7 is already pretty damn fast. My advice would be spend the extra money and save yourself the headache of buying a car that doesn't run properly.

Save the fixer-upper mentality for the real estate decisions. You can't make profit fixing a broken car, you never will.

Buy a daily driver first that's reliable, and spend some time reading up here while you save up money to buy an FD.

You can work on it on your own and electronics are not the major problem. Turbo control problems are everyone's nightmare. Then come parts breaking off, AST splitting, cats clogging, expensive parts, ...

Cheap / fast / reliable

They're all relative...

Rx-7 = Cheaper than Ferrari, more expensive than Civic
Rx-7 = Faster than Beatle, Slower than Mercialago
Rx-7 = More reliable than Bus, less reliable than Honda.

Well that's the advantage and the problem.

I'm not good with electrical stuff, and I have a lot of mechanical training but little mechanic experience. I do the work on my FD and I'm learning a lot, and with the help of the folks here (and the SEARCH BUTTON!!) I've gotten a lot done on my car and haven't made any major mistakes yet. So it is very possible to do it yourself, just begin with the Factory Service Manual (downloadable, or better to buy it and have a paper copy to page through) and change the oil, fuel filter, coolant, etc. There will always be bigger/more challenging things to do on this car.

Now to elaborate on my first statement - the FD has an electromechanical turbo control system that takes up all the space under the upper intake manifold (aka the rats nest). About 10 solenoids, 5 actuators, 70 hoses, and some other stuff that can bake/embrittle/come apart and affect turbo operation. That's the thing to worry about.

I'm exactly the same way. I got my car in May, and I've learned more since I got this car than I've ever learned in my entire life about working on cars. And the best part is, I love working on it. The rx7 big email list and this forum have proven invaluable time and time again.

So thats what that mess was in there! Test drove an FD today and looked in the
engine compartment, and noticed the "rat's nest". Just kinda bugged me, was wondering what it might've been. Also, abs unit seems kinda big too, or is it just me? Looked like a bunch of hydraulic lines on the passenger side firewall, is that what that was, ABS unit???

Mr. Stalin

I'll sell you my car for 11,000 dollars. I'm located in TX, you will have to cover shipping costs also. My car is well worth the money trust me. I'm selling very cheap because im very short on time. I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow morning at 6am and will be out of comission for afew days. Who ever buys my car made a very smart purchase because you could turn around and with more time sell it easily for 13 to 14 thousand. Take a look at my thread

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=329770

or just bid for 11,000 on ebay and I'll close the auction

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6327

I'm a legit guy, just need to get this thing off my hands before I leave for another year of college.
