Buy 93 RX-7? Insurance cost?

Hello, today I found this ad in my local paper:

http://www.cars.com/search/used/cc/s...=null&cid=null

93 black auto rx-7 for 7800. Left a message on answering machine - looking for a new car for a couple months now and this looks like a deal depending on how it looks(miles, condition, whatnot)

My main question is what is the general area, in cost, I can expect for insurance cost - Indiana requires insurance by law- now I can afford additional insurance cost if I purchase this vehicle - I was prepared to spend 10k+ on a car. This is near me so i'm glad about that. Before this RX-7 popped up I had considered these: Nissan 240sx, Newer Toyota Celica, Acura Integra, or a couple years old BMW 3 series. Since this is a sports car its not rated by symbol correct? The nissan was a symbol 22, acura's from 17-21 and celica a 16.

Ballpark figures? x $/ month?

Well, it all comes down to your age, gender, marital status, and driving record. I'm a 21 year old single guy w/ 2 tickets. I pay almost $400 a month w/ Progressive. That's for full coverage w/ $250 and $500 deductibles. As soon as they see 2-door twin turbo, red flags shoot up. You might be able to find something better. Good luck!

I gaurentee that you will be spending alot more then $10k+ on an FD. An FD in the $8000 range typically means low engine compression/etc.

I keep reading how people love the fact that FDs are so cheap to buy, but they really don't realize how much it's going to cost on the back end, whether to get it running perfect or modifying it. Simply false economy.

Or you could be getting a sweet deal, anything's possible.

Not trying to discourage you from getting an FD, but I hope you take the time to properly research buying one before taking the plunge. Best of luck.

Definately listen to what dclin said. A FD is sweet car but it is unlike any of the other cars you described. And I am almost 100% sure it'll have higher insurance premiums then all of them too. Also do lots of research before you buy it, FD's are generally high maintance cars and they do have some faults to them. All I can say is I only reccommend it for someone with a good job or with parents that will lend them $$ in case something breaks. If you just "barely" have $7800.00 then don't buy it or at least again I wouldn't recommend it. If you research about the car, and still want to go ahead and try and get it then go ahead. Also just so you know the autos are a full 1 second slower in the 1/4 mile then the 5spd manual cars and all 3rd gen rx7's suck in the snow(didn't notice where you're from). Ph and replacement parts are expensive and most can only be bought from the dealer. Well there's my speech!!

P.S. See the newbie links at the top of this forum and use the search button to answer other questions you may have, it'll give you an idea of what to look for, and give you an idea and should reinforce the statement that this is not your everyday car and it takes a bit of $$ to keep one on the road all year round. And try to take it to the mazda dealer to have a compression check done before you purchase the car or any reputable rotary mechanic to have it checked over.

It will be way lower than if you had your own policy with the car but I can't tell you exactly what it would be. Around $100.00 a month maybe? Could be less?

That would be a good idea, but make sure that your name is on it too. Two reasons, if something happens to it while you're driving, and when you go at it alone you'll have a record of insurance-another reason why mine is high.

I've got a '93 R1 VR (yeah, color matters). Mine's looking at about $1100/yr. That's full coverage (100/300), $500 deductable with 20% (I think) good driver, multicar, anti-theft and some other discount. I'm 26, in the Chicago burb area with Country Mutual. They usually have the best rates, but I dunno how far they span. If you're married, it typically cuts the rate in half, and if you're out in the sticks, it'll be less as well.

I'm up in Boston, and I pay $3,200 a year. That is for full coverage, as I am still paying for the car. I should mention that i'm a step 19, and for years all it took was an old woman walking her dog by the side of the road to get me to spin the tires.

So you pay 2,600 a year? That's not too bad. Still expensive though. That's with a clear record?
Where do you live, The Bronx?

I'm old. At 34, I pay $1200-1300 a year for full coverage with a 500 deductible. I also have 1 or 2 speeding tix.

If you plan to go for the FD for $8k...Get a second or third job to pay for the Rebuild, maintenance, & of course the mods...Have FUN!

As far as the symbols thing goes, I believe I remember reading an old old post about that the other day.
I'm not exactly sure, but I think the symbol range is 1-30, and an FD is a 27.

Good luck!

Me too, old, 30. Homeowner, multi-car discount, 1 or 2 tickets left to drop off, I pay about $1050/year for full coverage with 250/500 deduct.

If you are under 25, don't own a home, expect to pay $2500 - $3000/year. When I was in college I had a mid 90's :cough: Mustang GT, I paid $2700/year.

I pay $69/month with Farmers', but I have a mileage limit/show car/secondary vehicle insurance. In comparison, it costs me $169/month to insure my 92 Oldsmobile Bravada full time/daily driver. I'm 21 with 2 tickets that the ins. company doesn't know about yet, and 0 accidents.

As my primary car, with $1000 deductibles, I paid $200/mo, but then I got in some shiz... it's about to go up to $820/mo (No, I'm not staying with this ins company) through State Farm.

That's about what I pay ( 36 yrs old ). It all depends on your age and your record. I don't know about that car for 8,000 it probably doesn't have a motor Tom

Waite till they find out about those!! Insurance is a bad deal all the way around. It's expensive to get, then when you use it or get a ticket it goes up more

thanks for all your help, read a little more about the car, and i'm not sure yet. Probably going to have my mom on it as primary driver, being young -18- i'm probably screwed on this.

Tried calling twice more and still no call backs. Sucks on snow huh? Probably not a good car to have here. Probably should look for a different subaru. I don't have to worry about paying for this thing, was going to get a small loan w/ pymnts for like $100/month - I work collections at a bank, so I'm fine moneywise - its a really good job for being part time only.

I talked to one of my friends just last night about how he's doing, hadn't seen him in a while, well he said he's had 3 accidents and 3 tickets. Only people who will insure him are progressive and that'll cost him nearly 240/month for the basics on an 1987 oldsmobile. No tickets, no wrecks, but only driven for a couple years.

car says "great condition" usually to me that means "drivable"

thanks, i'll probably head over to check it out and take some pictures of it

hey guys I know this isnt my post, but since its along the same lines why not add to it. I currently own a 95 mx6. I know i know dont start on it..... Hopefully at the end of the winter I'll have it paid off. I'll probably be 21 when i go to buy my FD. My insurance now its 1,200.00 full coverage. I know being a woman my rates should be alittle bit better than the guys. What do you guys think it will be around? I have no accidents or tickets, a clean record. I use to own a 86 7 and i miss it. And now the only time i get to drive one is on the weekends driving my dads drag...it sucks
Oh yea and i know a guy who knows rotaries out the *** so fixing it when theres a problem will not be a problem. Plus hes cheap Oh yea my insurance now its allstate

I just recently purchased a 93 FD and I pay only $120 a month for full coverage with $250 deductibles through State Farm. I am 21, so I just got the discount, and have no accidents or tickets. SO happy to hear that price, thought it would have been WAY higher. Just give your insurance guy a call, they can give you a quote right then.
