Brake booster recall - do it yourself?

Hey all -

My new FD hasn't had the brake booster recall done. No biggie, but I'd MUCH rather do it myself than hand the keys to the local Mazda dealer!

Thing is, I want it done right - as in, having the recall logged with the VIN of the car as having been done, having the recall sticker put on the car, etc. I could easily just order the recall kit and do it myself, but nothing would be logged with Mazda that the work has been done.

Hell, I might just go down to the Mazda dealer and see if they'll let me do the work myself if they order the parts . I think they get reimbursed for labor, so if they don't need to use a tech's time to do the work, they'd be much better off.

From what I understand and can tell, it's SUPER easy to do this recall - replace the two lines to the brake booster. Is this the case?

Anyhow, this is my semi-noob question of the day .

Thanks,
Dale

Yep, it's two vacuum lines. One runs from the brake booster to the hardline on the firewall, then the next one is off the hardline to the UIM.

Since the car will have some vacuum left in it, it may be a little tough to pull the line off the brake booster, but it should only take you 5 minutes for the change.

Cool. I may just get the dealer to order the parts in, swap it in the parking lot, have them OK the repair and give me the sticker. Or, just see if they're lazy enough to just give me the kit and the sticker .

Most cars have had the recall done - I'm actually surprised it hasn't been done in this car.

There's a one-way check valve in the vacuum hose to the brake booster to keep it from seeing boost. The plastic check valve is right over the VERY hot exhaust, which leads to cracking and premature failure. The recall moves the check valve over by the brake booster so it's out of the way of heat.

I'm stumped as to why they did it like that - the check valve on the TurboII's was over by the brake booster. Go figure!

Yeah, I'm really surprised the recall hasn't been done - go figure.

Well, went to the local Mazda dealer today - they HAVE to do the work themselves as part of the deal. At least it's super easy for them to do (hopefully) and free . They have the part on order, should be here in a week or so.

Yeah, with all the lawsuits in this country. They have to do the work themselves. Just make sure they don't touch anything else.

It's probably just an insurance liability why you can't do it yourself in their shop. Plus then they also wouldn't know that the work was done right if they gave you the parts to do at home. I still have to get this taken care of for my car as well. I just keep forgetting.

Just a bump for this. I got mine done Wednesday at my local Mazda dealer. WOW. I'm soooo glad I got that taken care of. They had it in stock, and what a difference it made in brake feel and response. If you haven't done this recall yet............DO IT.

this is a 5 dollar kit from Ray @ Malloy. Both the lines are included.

This is so minor about the records. Hell put it on your car-fax report that they were done. Or call Mazda and tell them. Or tell Ray when you talk to him and maybe he can record the VIN info for you. I think he has the confidence in "most" people being able to change 2 hoses properly.... Hell Mazda even put yellow arrows on the damn things telling you the direction of them

Man, now you tell me . I've already got the parts coming at the local Mazda dealership. Oh well, at least it's totally free . That's good to know that it's that cheap!
