Boost spike after Even Cheaper Bastard mod... Help?
HI, I am becoming a pain in the ***...
I finished my even cheaper bastard mod today, slapped everything back together and went around for about 45 Kms.
While I didn't notice any problems each and every time I was checking my boost gauge, at some point, one time, the boost spiked up (and I might have been in between gears).
I only have the DP and now this.
Could you give me any opinions/suggestions on this?
Thank you,
Giovanni

Thats the thing about turbo rotaries, they respond very well as restrictions are eliminated.
Also sometimes an older, worn boost control system can't keep up with better air flow mods.

Something may be in the way of the waste-gate actuator rods travel causing it to hang up.
Also test the waste-gate solenoid, as well as the lines leading to the actuator it self, if theres a leak then the actuator can't move as designed.

I am not sure this could be one problem, as normally the car will sit at 10 under boost, without doing anything "funny". I just noticed this once, so from there on, I just watched the throttle all the way back home, to make sure I wouldn't screw anything up.
Keep also in mind that before the mod everything worked like a charm.
I didn't touch anything anywhere, with the exception of the airbox.
If you could give me some suggestion on how to test the solenoid (or the leak?).
Thank you again,
Giovanni

i have the same mods you do...cept i have duel intakes(not the twin intake stock airbox). the weather makes the boost spike the way it does in your car. cold air can make the boost spike, if you have easy passage to the intake. i would just keep away from wot on cold days until you get a boost controller.
hope this helps you

Be particularly careful on a very cold night when you WOT. Thats how I blew my first engine cause I didn't have a boost controller.
To be honest I prefer to drive on a cold night as the response feels alot better than during a hot day but thats the risk you run without the proper mods.

Weather changes do play a big factor in our boost levels here up north. Figure about one extra psi per 10C. So if your car runs at 10psi when it's nice and heat soaked on a 22C day, you're looking at at least 12psi on a 0C day. Until I got a boost controler, I was easily hitting fuel cut in below 0 weather (only mod was a dp). Not only that but if it's below zero, warm up times (heat soak times) are huge, so while the car might be warmed up, the intercooler etc is still ice cold and you can easily hit 13psi and beyond durring this time. Spiking while 1st applying the throttle and at transition becomes an issue too.
The only way around it is to buy a boost controller, preferably one that lets you pick between 2 or more settings. I have a profecB spec 2 and it cured the problem but you still have to be careful. I have a super hot day heatsoaked setting, a regular 15-20C setting and when it's really cold I just shut it off and run off the spring.
