Hi to all I am in the market for a boost controller. I would like to know what other people have out there and how they like it.

So far on the top of my list is the Blitz SBC-id Spec R. I would like something to work with my twins which I would like to keep sequential as I want boost response to be as instant as possible.

 

I have had a couple and here is my opinion. I really liked the blitz unit, but set-up is kind of a PITA and takes some time to tune, not as much as the avc-r though. Control s boost well once properly set-up though. You could also get the blitz i-color which has more bells and whistles, is in color and looks better.

For ease and simplicity I would go with the greddy profec B. Super easy to tune and holds boost rock solid.

For all the bells and whistles go with the apexi avc-r, this is the largest one of the bunch and from what I read the most difficult to tune but has a lot of features besides controlling boost.

Another option to the blitz sbc is the hks evc, looks better and has a few more options then the blitz unit. Many of the mkiv guys use this to control 30+ psi turbos, so shouldnt be a problem on our car. Price is the same as the blitz unit.

So, for simplicity and cost I would go with the greddy profec. For all the bells and whistles, and a good looking unit I would go with the hks evc 5 or 6 which is about $200 more.

 

If you're staying sequential then go with the knightsports EBS III or IV. They are made for the FD and are SO easy to set-up. Just convert your Psi to kg/cm2 (14.22psi = 1kg/cm2) and input it into the display. Install is real easy too. It comes with a harness the connects between the wiring harness and ecu.

DaleClark has a nice review/install on his site but it seems to be down again.

 

i think you need to be on the stock ecu to use this as well, not sure.

 

By his sig, I'd say it works with a PFC too, but I wonder about flashed stock ECUs like my Pettit Unlimited.
I'm over the mechanical boost controllers, and I'm looking for something a little more reliable/ confidence inspiring.

If you just want simple hi/lo boost setting, go with the Greddy Type-S. Very similiar to the old school Profec B but with a much smaller valve unit, rather than a brick(Profec B). Very easy to install and adjust, just set it and forget it.

another vote for the greddy profec type-s, nice easy to use design, and fits perfectly in the small 1/4 DIN vent under the steering wheel

 

I had heard that the Blitz was the most precise. The I-Color is too much money for the look, yet call me girly but I want something with a display not just a ****; which is why the SBC-id III was top of my list.

RX7Link please take a pic of the HKS EVC VI @ night for me it would be much appreciated. The only thing that threw me off about the HKS was that you can get an additional thing to plus it into a comp and "tune" boost so it seemed way to complicated.

That's correct. It works perfect with the powerfc. I don't see why it wouldn't work with a stock reflash either. I just love this thing. No 0-99 crap or gain or any b.s. Just set your boost and that's it. You can make the boost response sharper or more controllable by turning a **** on the unit but i've never felt the need to use it. The biggest thing for me was the fact it was made specifically for the FD and not just a stepper motor and a computer.

 

Seems you have a pretty good idea of what you want. I'm another for the "set it, forget it" Profec B, type S. It does feature two settings so you can "detune" if the car is ever in anyone else's hands.

Best: Blitz I color or HKS EVC6 (Options Galore)
Simple: Greddy Profec B (Old Reliable)
Manual: Halman Boost Controller

 

Ball and spring manual boost controllers work very well. They give repeatable performance and very rapid boost response. I have a pair of Hallmans with in cabin controllers that I am very happy with.

I have used them all and for useability and price the Profec is the best in my opinion. I had the Blitz SBC-ID on my 7 and liked it, but it was pricey.

Most name brand EBCs are very similar once you get used to how the interface operates. its more of personal taste and liking. My main reason for going with EVC because i don't like mixing too many brands since i have mostly HKS products. If you can afford it, I would go with the blitz SBC i-color.

 

Thanks for posting the pic. I wonder if that white display gets annoying at nighttime. Also the PFC has a green background, I have seen Blitz SBCid's with green backgrounds like PFC but now I look at the pics of the Blitz SBCid-III and the background looks blue so I don't want to mix to many lights in the cockpit.

 

Profec-B. Somewhat small size, relatively cheap, and it's been incredibly reliable in my last 3 boosted cars.

 

Has anyone tried the Boost Control kit from Apexi for the Power FC? I could have a mean deal on it.

 

if you have the PFC or a boost gauge, i don't see the point of having a boost controller with a screen, what else is it going to tell you that the PFC mounted correctly or a boost gauge cannot?

 

You can control boost with a boost controller, thats what they're for... PFC or boost gauge cannot control boost on their own.

Another one that we have been installing a lot of lately is the AEM Tru boost. Gauge type, cheap and easy to use.

If you do a search through the forums, it seems a lot of people were having problems using the apexi boost kit for the power fc.

 

AVCR Is pricey but worth it in the long run.

 

in my 85 i use the turbosmart two stage controller. works great and holds dead on solid. nice to go at the flick of a switch from lo to high boost. simple and effective
