Question Best intake?

By the way this is 7thSign, but Rx7Sign is gonna be my new name so theres no confusion between me and my cousin, I own the RX7 he owns the MR2. Anyways I was curious if anybody could help me purchase the best performing intake setup. I wanted to buy HKS but Ray told me it wasnt a good intake and that M2 was the best. Any suggestion. Links and pictures help. Thanks I was succesful with the guage post so I decided to try it with intake.

As with anything, it's hard to say that one is "best."

I don't have any real flow numbers, but I can say I'm happy with my M2 CF intake. AFAIK, M2 is out of business, so you'll probably have to get one used or find one with a similar design, if that's what you decide to buy.

I've heard the HKS gets clogged up easily, but I don't have any first-hand experience with it.

Dave

I have the Greddy intake. Its okay I guess. Came with the car. Filters dont look like they filter all that much. Its just this weird sponge material.

Which is pretty much the worst of the bunch. Both the older style HKS and Trust filters are that foam crap that doesn't filter worth a **** and also dry out and break off and fly into your engine!
On a positive note they do fit into some tighter spaces better than most other filters.

The A'PEXi won by a whopping margin of 0.1 bhp. Some test...

Ha ha yup that's the one....I myself am a fan of foam filters, it's what I have used with all my cars and never had any problems, but with the single I will be running K&N.

RX-7 Fashion (Rick's Rotary Performance) makes an airbox similar to the M2 unit but is lower in height.

They all made essentially the same power. Look at the filtering performance.

Back when I had stock twins, I bought the Apexi FMIC and it came with the apexi intakes. It was a bit more but worth it. And don't believe the bs, that a FMIC gives you lag either. I ran 11.60's all day on drag radials with big heavy wheels too. The FMIC worked great with the stock twins and I used it when I went single turbo too.
Anyhow, I liked the apexi intake because it didn't require any manintaince.

Is that really lower in height? It looks exactly the same. Maybe if I had them side by side I could see a difference.

Rotary Extreme has one like this too. I'm not sure about the height, compared with the RX-7 Fashion or the M2. For some reason, it's not in their intake section, but if you find their v-mount intercooler, it's listed with that. It's all polished metal, if you're looking for some bling-bling in the engine bay... Personally, I'm a fan of the M2's carbon fiber appearance. It's not too showy, but you can tell it's not stock. (The big M2 logo proves that.)

I went with the M2 because I've used K&N filters in the past and liked them (incl. a stock drop-in on the FD before the M2), and using the housing to get outside air "made sense." I've never seen numbers to back up that theory though.

Has anyone actually done any tests on the effectiveness of the M2-style intakes at getting outside air vs. the apexi/hks style intakes? Does it actually make a difference in temps? (No, I didn't search. I'll leave that as an excersize for those who are laying down the ca$h on an intake.)

The issue here is the temperature of air that reaches the engine, assuming flow is the same which, given that test that someone posted, it sounds like it basically is. An aftermarket intercooler would help the intake temps too, obviously. To keep it simple, if you figure the temp-drop across an intercooler is fairly constant, any drops you can get from the intake will be added to the drops of the intercooler (since they are in series with each other) and thus the colder the air into the intake, the colder the air to the engine, all else the same.

The choice of which style is better would really hinge on the above. If there is an advantage in the temps with the M2-style, I'd go with that.. If the temperature drop for either style of intake is negligible, I'd go with one that doesn't have a housing since maintenance would be easier. I'm getting really tired of taking out that airbox whenever I have to do ANYTHING to the engine. Still, I like it and I'm happy with it. It's really just a minor nuisance.

Anyone have temp #s? Anyone? Bueler? Bueler?

Wow, I really made this question complex!! Sorry 'bout that.

Foam filters are just fine, however they MUST be oiled to filter properly.

Here's part of a FAQ about foam filters:

5) Can i use regular motor oil on my foam filter?
Any oil is better than none. Air filter oil is specially formulated to have a much higher "sticky" property than motor oil and it is the oil, not the foam, that does the filtering.
You'll notice those BS online filter result tests never mention what type (if any) filter oil they used on their foam filters (because they didn't use any).

You can get the filter oil at just about any motorcycle shop.

Best depends on how you'll be using the car.

FWIW, here is a great thread in the 3rd gen archives https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ghlight=intake

Scuderia/Robinette also had some good info including observed air temps and such. This topic has been beaten to death over and over...

That's why I ditched the filters and installed a pair of K&N to the pipes. Sort of looks like the Pettit set up except with polished aluminum hard pipes

I have the stock box with the Racing Beat cold air duct and a drop in K&N. I have been contemplating runnning a similar setup as shown above "Best Cheapest".
I have a set of hardpipes and obviously can buy the filters inexpensively. I was wondering where you have the other lines that run to the stock airbox plumbed in.
I have an aftermarket BOV, so that is taken care of. What about the CRV and the airpump? Did you just put small K&N filters on them?

Modding your stock airbox is the "Best and Cheapest". It can easily be modded to work BETTER than the M2:

The foam in that picture is just a strip of weather-sealing foam on the edge of an aluminum plate to seal it with the hood (look at it again). It isn't a big all-foam divider.
