Practice only yesterday, more important stuff starts today. Given they're 10 odd seconds off the 1hr race lap done a couple years back, suspect there's bedding and other things going on.
HoonMediaTV on youtube might enlighten you. There are much more worthy recipients of largesse over here, I might add, if thinking that way, rather than Michael!
According to the organizers, in these classes, pretty much run what ya brung, biggest problem for the wankling machines is 100 litre fuel limit - not normal FIA rules for capacity. Car may be built under these regs too though and not familiar with what happens there.....

Well good luck to Ric Shaw's team! As for the air temps, lets see what they say when they analyze the data during and after the race. It's one think to speak theory; application and something else - especially during these conditions (12 hours).
AdaptronicAus - I'm looking to you to give us a full update on the data when you have a chance. Good luck and make everyone proud.

I'm looking at the data right now from the last run; its fine. Its more about the entire picture and NOT just one item.. For example one can be much leaner if their advance isn't that high, or vice verse.
The car is first in its class by 0 .8 seconds last I heard...

Hi all,
Yes, we're first in class by about 0.8 seconds so far. There's another qualifying session this afternoon but we don't intend to run in it. I'm editing some in-car from Ric's hot lap this morning and if I can upload it (really slow internet connection here!) I'll post a link soon.
The Live Streaming and Timing | V8, Bathurst 12 Hour, Supercars, Bathurst 1000 Race, Mt Panorama - Australia website has live streaming right now; they've got various races and qualifying on today (qualifying for the 12-hour, plus IPRA (improved production), Formula Ford, Holden HQs racing).
We haven't made any changes to the setup; just a bit of fine tuning to things like alarm thresholds and refining the "process" (ie, all the other things I have to record like laps numbers, tyre usage and so on).
I'm rendering the in-car footage now with Sony Vegas, then I need to upload it... stay tuned! (pun intended).
You're right, turbo rotary in an enduro is never going to be great for fuel economy; I think we are going to use about as much fuel as a V8 Supercar per lap, and we're going to be about 15 seconds slower, and they run E85. They run a lot leaner than we do (naturally aspirated), plus rotaries aren't the most fuel efficient engines anyway. Regarding the ducting and so on, I'm sure there are lots of opinions out there; I asked Ric about this and he said it was a tradeoff between promoting more air through the radiator at the expense of the intercooler, so it's going to be a tradeoff and everyone is going to have their opinions. Our engine temps are really stable so that's good; maybe there's some scope to move that balance point a little bit but there are a lot of tradeoffs (how much time do you spent to evaluate it, test it... etc)
Cheers everyone!

Love it! Man, thanks for sharing the in-car video. After hearing about drivers loving their paddle shifters I can understand why from watching this video. The driver has walls on both sides, a tight up and down hill section and shifting looks like it takes concentration away from the driver. Good luck in the second heat of quali! I'm looking forward to watching this race tomorrow. I just hope the camera guys give you more time on camera. And remember it's a 12 hour race: keep the car on track and stick it for the long haul - I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that. Enjoy and we'll be cheering you guys on from here.

Yes, Ric and I spoke about setting that up. Technically we liked the idea, but it does involve a fair bit of complexity so you'd want it to be well shaken down. It needs a potentiometer on the sequential gearbox barrel to confirm to the ECU that the next gear has engaged correctly before the ECU re-enables the ignition; and this avoids the possibility of missed shifts. But it would need to be pretty thoroughly tested; we didn't really have the time to implement and test it all; and if it were just for a race where he was driving, that would be one thing, but when you have people paying to drive the car we need to ensure that it's all reliable and tested. I'd love to do that though. Maybe on my car, although that would then mean I need to upgrade to a sequential box first....
Cheers
Andy

Here's also the GoPro from the front of the car for the same lap; probably higher definition:
Yeah it's a great event. Warren Luff, Craig Lowndes and someone else won it last year, and teams come from Germany to compete. Last year Speed covered the final 90 minutes live I think; not sure about this year...

We will be able to stream the race live. Would you be willing to share the wheel setup of the RX-7? Curious to know what size wheel and tires you guys are running for front and rear. I believe the race start for USA is 3PM EST.

Hi guys, the in-car has a Race Technologies microphone which was part of the video recorder; the camera at the front is a Gopro Hero I think; it's in its own perspex enclosure so that probably helps with the wind noise. The tyres are 27-65-18 Michelins front and rear (I guess that's 270mm wide). We will have to run wets at some point though because it's going to rain...

I'm not sure on the brakes; I'm pretty sure the callipers are AP racing and I know Ric likes Hawk Blue pads; not sure which discs they are.
Here's some footage from practice (Andrew B driving):

A couple of mechanical issues; we're back on the track now but we had to change the gearbox to the spare H-pattern synchro box. Not sure the ins and outs; I'm just counting laps and analysing the data.

Ended up 4th in class; we also had to stop to repair an exhaust leak; Ric was overcome by exhaust fumes that leaked into the cabin through the gear shifter hole... got to pack up now - more later
