I think im in the same boat. And can speak from both the quiet and loud preferred groups.

My FD is not obnoxiously loud like some fd's I've heard with midpipe and apexi exhaust with single turbo etc.

All I have is an hks downpipe, the STOCK cat and a pfs catback which is one of the loud ones. I drive the car on the weekend and I need sound..you need sound in a car like this. Its a race car basically that you unleash your inner child when you drive it. There are times I actually want the fd a tad bit louder, in a sense of going half bridge. That type of loud with a resonated mid instead of my setup now.

But then there are times I wish it was a bit quieter. Like when I wanna drive the car late at night or early morning.

Its a decision you have to be sure of.

My daily driver is a 2006 gto 6spd. It has the stock exhaust but out of the 3 years my generation gto was available, the 06 has a revamped exhaust to give it more sound from factory. Think of it as a stock c6z exhaust. Its quiet but still loud for a factory car.

This car is totally tolerable when it comes to sound. But I find it too quiet. Im in search for a catback now. And will prob do headers/xpipe later.

So in the end all im saying is sometimes you want it quiet but in the end we really want sound lol

I welded a Vibrant metallic cat and a vibrant straight through muffler to my mid pipe and an RB exhaust. The car has a killer sound at idle and is very quiet at WOT, almost stock quiet (single turbo with 475 rwhp before the exhaust change). It certainly costed a lot of power and I notice higher water temps after spirited driving, but it makes the car less stinky and nicely quiet.

I just bought a mid pipe again after a year of that set-up, though.... I miss the power. With a large single, the power is in the RPMs that the cat affects the most, I think this set-up would be ideal with a fast spooling turbo that makes its power lower in the RPM band.

is this something unique to the fd? I thought that I had forgotten how to drive a manual transmission suddenly. didn't know others were experiencing this. it took me a while to learn how to drive this car in traffic, which it hates!
i was going to say its a rotary engine thing, but my jetta is worse than the P port!

you can either grab another gear (is it weird to say its a tuning issue, and then suggest shifting?), or spend some time tuning the ecu.

An RB exhaust + Cat is too restrictive IMO unless you have a boost control issue. The RB does such a good of quieting the car down you can go catless without a resonator and still not make your ears bleed or attract a ton of attention.

Keeping/making things more "practical" and civilized for the street would also include thinking about wheel size and suspension.

I am currently removing my cat and I have a RB single tip. I hope what you say is true! I want some screaming at higher RPMs but live way back in a neighborhood, so it's got to be tame at lower rpms. If I come and go at odd hours, I don't want to wake up the entire street.

clutch set up, i dont think the flywheel will make more difference in "easier" if ur only making 400 id say go with the act hd pp and street clutch.. it was so easy to drive this setup before i got hp hugnry and upgraded to a 6spuck sprung.

Im worried about this as I need to change my exhaust. Hope I dont loose much/any power.
When you say it lost its *****, did it loose substantial power or just its throaty sound?
Though, I MIGHT be able to get away with just sticking some other muffler in there somewhere..duno iv gota go from 104db at 4krpm to about 94db..(i dont need/have any cats)
What also sucks is I currently spit some nice flames, hope i dont loose that..I think they will get reduced a bit but cant see itl get rid of them completly...
damn it sucks having to keep the public happy

wow, wasnt expecting this much feedback on this thread.

The car has a power fc and has not been specifically tuned. So thats is likely the culprit of the bucking. I am running a fuel map from a car that has a similiar set up. i cant find/trust anyone in my area to tune the car and havent found the time to travel for a good quality tune.

I like and enjoy the sound of the rotary a lot of the time, especially when its time to play. But when i am idling the car in my driveway to warm it up before a drive, i know the whole neighbourhood can hear it.
So taking it out at all hours is not really an option. There are of course other times when i wish it wasnt so loud aswell, the noise and bucking can be embarrasing.
