Unhappy another issue with the FD... it might be time to move on

its been the summer of issues for my car... and now its come to this:

no a/c and no working windows make me pretty upset during the summer.

ive searched and i cant find anyone with my exact issue. as of this afternoon my windows (both driver and passenger) and mirrors (both), stopped working. i took the door panel off to look at the connectors and it looked ok. i tested the motor and it works... both of them do (drivers side was pretty slow last time they worked though). also, my security system has a tendency to randomly go off for no reason and its becoming more and more difficult to stop it.

im almost at my wits end. i love the car and i had planned on keeping it till the chassis warped but right now i dont have the time or alternate transportation to keep working on this car.

ive been thinking of selling it as-is to a club member that can care for her. ive also been looking at c5s which, in my opinion, is the only car comparable to the FD that i can afford (and that i want).

i need help, and opinions please.

This about it this way: If your A/C and windows worked, would you be in love with the car again? So, just be patient and try and work it out. You should not have the FD as a DD anyways...get a 500.00 car man so you have the time to enjoy the FD. Trust me, when you get the issue handled...you will love it all again.....kinda like marriage...it isn't always peachy, but you don't just give up and walk away

If you were in MN i'd offer you an FC for a DD. But an FD should simply not be a DD in my opinion. It can be done, and I have done it. But I wish I hadn't, as I caused alot of repairs to be needed.

I would say check the fuses first. Then, which you already did, the motor. If these all check out, get a tester light and see if voltage comes from the switch to the motor.

The switch fails due to corroded/dirty contacts for many. Mine went out. So I pulled it apart and resurfaced the contacts with a needle file and lubricated with some switch grease from my RC cars mechanical speed control I had lying around. Now it work better than when I bought the car!

Yea little things like that can really upset you when its your DD. Take it to a mechanic might be a quick fix.

Can you control the passeneger window from the passenger switch? If so, it's most likely that your driver side switch box needs to be replaced. A couple years ago, my windows got stuck in the half-way position and I could only close the passenger side window using the passeneger side switch. I had to bite the bullet and replace the driver's side switch control but it resolved everything.

Just my 2 cents...

Pull out your green shop manual and start with the window troubleshooting. Go thru the troubleshooting procedures step by step. You'd be surprised as to what you'll find and how easy it is to locate root cause, and almost every time the problem is associated with something that recently occurred. For instance, washed the engine bay out yesterday - got relays wet and they acted up today....etc, etc.

fuses all checked out.. in fact they were the first thing that i looked at.

i am looking into a real DD.... driving the FD every-single-day puts wear on both it and its driver.

would a failure in the driver side window switch affect both windows? to answer someones question.... no, i cannot roll down the passenger window with the passenger side switch.

Your problem is most likely in the door hinge area (corroded connectors where the wires come out of the door and go into the chassis. Pull the rubber seal back and see if there may be a connection (poor) issue as both the controls for the mirror, and doors are going through there. As for the Ac we need more information than it doesn't work.

^are you talking about past the door running behind the fender? i pulled the door panel off and checked all the connectors but didnt go much past the door itself. i'll look into that once i get home.

as for the a/c... my compressor is suspect. last time i tried to run it the pulley didnt turn much... making something of a grinding noise.

Yep where the wires come out of the door, they then pass through a connector into the chassis. Many people have found less than perfect connections at this point (sin some cases required rewiring). There are too many people on here removing there AC units that you should have no problem finding the one you need for quite a reasonable price in the wanted/fs section.

problems like that suck...
if you have power at the motor....can you hear the motor wanting to work??
see if you have power at the switch...
not sure on fd's ..but you can jump wires to see if that works without a switch...
good luck

if you can make it through the initial "everything is breaking" phase, after that its no trouble to DD. i know my car blew a different coolant hose each week until i had replaced them all, among a bunch of other crap. its annoying yes, and your problems sound especially annoying, but eventually there is light at the end of the tunnel

If all the fuses checked out, try the relays. The ones in the front near the bumper and hood release. Water can get in and damage those sometimes.

find the main ground for the windows and mirrors system and test the continuity
it may just be a grounding issue

If the fuses and motors check out fine, dont you think you should be checking the switch?

Time to bust out the schematic and do some work man

A little thing like no AC and non working windows shouldnt make you wanna sell the car or something because that can happen to any car. If you're blowing engines every year and stuff like that, then yes.
