Anodized intercooler
i just installed my new greddy front mount. i purchased a 2nd hand anodizing kit and anodized the sides of the intercooler. the rest of my piping will be anodized also when i am finished.... Thoughts ?

Powdercoating isn't good - it will probably act as an insulator, reducing the performance of the intercooler. You never want to powdercoat the fins/tubes of an intercooler.
Anodizing only affects a very tiny depth of the aluminum - and I wonder if it's heat transfer properties are better, worse, or nearly the same. I doubt the difference is large either way - anodizing is mostly a cosmetic process. It does look pretty cool.

Although I have to ask, anodizing is usually a single semigloss color. What's with the so-called silver flake? Anodizing isn't a paint - so I've never heard of a flake anodized finish.

A real anodizing process requires electricity (hence the name "anode" in the word "anodizing" :-). The idea is to force a hard outer layer of alumina (a.k.a. aluminum oxide a.k.a. Al3O2) to form on the bare aluminum, increasing its resilience against corrosion down the road. It can also be done with dyes, hence the colors.
Alumina is an insulator. That said, it is a very thin layer and may not matter much... I dunno. However, anodizing is not a painting process...
Take care,

I've always heard that anodizing was done by making tiny pores in the metal and filling them with a dye, making more surface area which = better cooling. But this is all second-hand internet information so it might be wrong.

Its not anodized, its painted.
Definition of anodizing:A process to produce an oxide film or coating on metals and alloys by electrolysis. The metal to be treated is made the anode in an electrolytic cell and its surface is electrochemically oxidized. Anodization can improve certain surface properties, such as corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, hardness, appearance, etc. One metal very often anodized is aluminum, all the above properties improve, furthermore, since the surface film is porous, the aluminum metal can even be colored by the application of pigments or dies in the pores. See also an Encyclopedia Article.
You can obviously do custom colors but not multiple colors. This has just been painted to match his car. I really hope his paint shop didn't call it anodizing.

Better yet is that anodizing changes the thermal properties. Polished aluminum has an emissivity of 0.03, which means that it does not radiate heat. Anyone who has ever welded aluminium will testify to the fact that hot aluminum will bite you without warning. If you put your hand next to a piece of hot steel, you'll know it's hot; but not aluminum - you'll grab it and get burned. Ever see red hot aluminum? No, because it doesn't radiate.
Anodized aluminum has an emissivity of from 0.56 (chromic) to 0.88 (darker colors), which makes it a very good radiator. Every calorie of heat it emits is one calorie of heat that doesn't go back into your motor.

i am sorry i wasnt asking if everyone liked it to interpret what the process was just the look. it IS NOT "real" anodizing" rather anodzing "
look alike" in person you cannot see the difference ... so waht is the real difference? nothing but the price!
and i dont remember who asked but .... NO my car IS NOT orange!
i was just asking the thoughts on if everyone thought it looked good!! thanks for any and all feed back- jason
