Which Aluminum AST is good quality???

Sorry folks, I got thrown off by Big Head Brad and his counterpart's comments. Go with the ASI AST. It's beefier around the neck and less prone to bending.
For Big Head and counterpart, shut your damn asses up. It's a thread to see which AST people recommend. Not which route they should take. Are you two bent over buddies or something? I now feel like beating someone with my HKS DP to get the bends straightened out!

I'm running the Tri-Point AST and it's a quality piece. It comes anodized black and has worked flawlessly for the past 1 1/2 years. I replaced it after the factory one came apart in my hands while trying to remove one of the hoses off the nipple.

Wouldn't it be pretty hard to tell if you lost a coolant seal due to not having an AST though?

[QUOTE=JaNusSolSumnus]'those in the know' designed this car and they designed it with an AST in mind. /QUOTE]

For people not running the AST or who have performed the AST elimination: Do any of you think it is good for "air pockets" to generate and stay in your motor's coolant system? (Just for clarification, the air pockets I speak of are the coolant vaporizing due to the extreme heat generated in the engine and creating the vapor bubbles that the AST gathers)?
If this is a good thing for a rotary motor, please explain the logical reasoning behind it?

i have had no ast for QUITE SOME TIME. . . as have others. no adverse effects. . . and others will say the same. its not that big of a deal. if you feel comfortable with speding over $100 on an aluminum tank then by all means do it. . . but to tell the guys that eliminate it that they arent all that bright just isnt a good idea. . . cause theres no proof that the elimination is the cause of overheating. as a matter of fact, ive seen more cars WITH the ast fail before one w/o it. herblenny. . . do you agree? hahaha, when you remove parts that can fail. . . you remove a failure. simple as that. there are 4 places on the ast that can fail. 3 hoses and the cap. those hoses can bust or the clamp can be loose or broken and the cap can fail as well as the area that the cap tightens down to.
but hey, lets go with the manufacturers on this one. . . hell, they gave us an FPD that causes fires!!!! thats gotta be worth something.
also, as hot as these engines get, the coolant should DEFINITELY be changed every year. . . like all owners loyally do. . . ha
and then, if there is air trapped in the system the light will come on when the car is started in the morning and you can happily walk to the garage, grab some water, and pour some more in.
not too hard to figure out there.

I got a RX7Store AST. I think it doesn't worth over 100 bucks. The finish is bad with scratch marks everywhere. It started to leak coolant slowly once I put it on. I never got any reply from them after I told them the problem. I will never get stuff from RX7store.

A reliability mod is any that eliminates a weak link.
The thermostat housing holds over a quart of coolant, with multiple chambers. I drilled bypass holes through the chambers to make one larger cavity. Plenty of room to seperate those nasty air bubbles.
There's more than one way to skin a cat.

There are a bunch of ******* morons in this thread. Sounds like some of you newbs need to shut up and move the **** on cause you dont know what your talking about. Maybe I should shed some light on the subject because it sounds like some of you dont even know what the "ast elemination mod" is or how it works.
The way it works is you install a new filler neck on top of the thermostate housing that has a nipple in it. This nipple runs to the overflow tank so the air will escape to the overflow. This is how the 1st and 2nd gen were and you can get the filler neck with the nipple from the Mazda dealership.
The downside is that your system no longer holds as much water and it has nothing for surge. The "ast" as we like to call it is basically a surge tank or expansion tank. If you want to buy one just look up racing surge or expansion tank on google and you'll find tons of them for V8 cars, go to Summit, Jegs, ect.
If you want to find out the benifit of running a surge tank you can read this quick article on C&R racings website. You can trust them, they know more about cooling systems than anyone on this board. http://www.crracing.com/apparel/jackets.html
I know a LOT of people that have eliminated thier AST with no harmfull side effects, however I'm still running one and plan to keep running one.
Also, I dont see how a ast or surge tank could be made out of a coke can, I think your misstaken. It was more than likely a catch can. If it really was a ast someone should be smacked.

Yea, I think Steve will be here around the end of Jan. Come on down and get some tuning. We can all hang out and mess around.
Here is a fine example of a high quality expansion tank that you'll find on some V8 sites, and what do ya know its actually cheaper
