In all honesty is a fd ok for a daily driver?

And, to answer your question "what's your secret..."
I don't have one. An extended warranty(7 year/85,000 miles) has helped out a lot. My car has broken down a lot over the years. New motor/turbos @ 63k etc.
I just fork out the cash...

i drive my rx-7 every day because i love to drive the thing. When i drive another car it just isnt as much fun. Imo if you drive it everyday, take care of it and dont run the crap out of it 24/7 and you shold be fine.
Peace,
Zach

Is it ok for a daily driver? If you have shallow pockets than no. If you don't have to stretch money to afford the car and have "money to burn" so to speak than yes. But even if you have deep pockets and live anywhere you'll receive some snow in the winter than no again.
I found it to be a great car to drive everyday but it does cost $$. And if you're going to try to drive it in the snow, get lots and lots of bags of sand, some studded snow tires and pray to hell you make it and don't get stuck. I've been side ways at 40mph changing lanes in traffic before so snow driving isn't recommended by me. My reccomendation to anyone who doesn't have money to throw around so to speak and wants to conserve money is to get a honda or similar as a daily driver.

I always drive my FD. Nothing funnier than dropping a huge fireball in morning traffic How many times, when you're in your beater to do think to yourself "If I had my 7 that guy wouldn't be tailgating me, he'd be watching me heading for the horizon.."
But, to be honest, it upsets me how stuff wears when you use it as a daily. The console and door trims are scratched / chipped and the shifter cover and steering wheel leather are worn.
The car is also deviously geared to lose you your license. Especially if you're running seq. In Australia at least, all the speed limits are right on points where the primary turbo is just waiting to pounce.

the rx-7 should not be subjected to stop and go, bumper to bumper traffic in LA or other major cities. that's just cruel and unusual punishment plus if you're going to be paying $1000 for some tires why waste it commuting?

My 114K miles were done in LA traffic...punishment? Isn't that what a car is for? Drive from A to B....I just got there faster with more style than a ricer.
What's the point of owning a car that sees the road once a week. For you guys who live in cold climates...for you I totally understand how it is different. I can't imagine tring to drive a FD in a snow drift.
But for you other guys who live in nice climate areas I don't see why you guys make such a big deal about daily driving. Cars are supposed to be driven.

What is a daily driver That is not costly? I was thinking of getting an awd talon? I would rather not do that but if the fd is going to constantly break on me I wont do it.

The guys aren't saying that the car will break down all the time. However, when something does happen, it's usually not a quick fix. In situations like those, it's nice to have a second car.

I would also look for something that I could get the newest year of, something that hasn't been beat on. If you are already shelling out money for your FD, unless you have money to burn, you don't want to be shelling out more money on keeping a daily driver running.
Me? I don't need a 12 second daily driver. Just something that gets great gas mileage and isn't going to sieze up on the highway.

I'm 18 so I dont have the luxery of having 2 cars. I can only have 1 car and I don't want it to be a beater, I want something with some speed. I thought if I got a rebuild from marvelspeed a new radiator, FMIC, big oil cooler, and some fine tuned haltech I would be ok. If i'm still at risk of breaking things then I quess I should consider another car. I've saved 3k in three months just so I could have this car. It kinda pisses me of that I probably wont get it

Well, if I were in your shoes, I would look for something that was a non-turbo. Turbos are just something else that can go wrong on a car...
Don't spend every dime on it, but make it nice and save the rest so you can afford a better car later. I'm much older than you, and I didn't get my first sports car until I was 20 (bought a FC). It's much better to wait until you can afford the car to get one. You don't want to have a nice sports car, but no money to do anything else do ya?
There are better things to life, like women! Women don't like broke guys.

i don't think an FD is meant to be driven in traffic. The only time and I mean the ONLY time it is meant to be driven is when it's driven HARD! otherwise there is no point, unless you are BATMAN and all you want to do is showoff to high schoolers...
if you want transportation get a civic, if you want a fun bang for the buck car to drive hard get an FD
