Does anyone have the link for the guy who did the full oil filter comparison? It wasn't for RX-7s, but he tested several different brands, took them apart and compared them, he noticed a big difference between some of the brands. I can't remember the link or which filters did the best, but he proved his point that all oil filters are not created equal. I'll look for it and post the link if I can find it on a different computer. Oh yeah, I run a Mobil 1 and it seems to work quite fine.

hey guys, when buyin an oil filter from Mazda don't tell them it's for a rx-7, tell them it's for a mazda v6 engine...it's the same filter but alot cheaper. just thought you wanna know

I use the mostly mazda filters or bosch. In the mazda I will use either the short one (FD3S) or the earlier one which is taller and has more capacity. Never had a problem with leakage.

No it's not Turbo'd
Running over stuff on the FD shouldn't cause an oil filter leak, maybe an oil pan leak, but definitely not a filter leak...
**** I just go to Jiffy Lube Every 2Kmi, and get new oil and filter every time.. and if it leaks it's their butt.... and the oil never gets enough time to get really dirty... due to new filter / oil, then @ 20K intervals I'll do a oil change back to back @ 200 Mi to get what stays in the oil coolers clean....

My k/n hasn't leaked, try another one. Your filter gasket might be missing or damaged. the part # is (HP-1008). K&N claims on the box that they are leak proof, I use them on all my vehicals. The auto parts store near you might not stock them but they can get them in less than a week, save the wait next time-buy a few.

You can get them at the local AutoZone if you have them in your area.

i used an aftermarket 1, purolater i think, seemed to work ok, but ive read several threads about aftermarket 1's saying otherwise. so now i just use the oem. also the oem comes with a new washer to put on the oil plug. never had a problem with the oem.

Just bought my first non-Mazda filters at Canadian Tire. They don't appear to leak.
Just for your info.:
1st gen filters are quite large - good capacity and filtering ability.
2nd gen filters were reduced in diameter by half.
3rd gen filters are tiny and I doubt they filter much before plugging (and going to bypass).
All above fit in the 3rd gen. I used the first gen filter as the car had one on when I bought it so I knew it would fit. They contain much more filtering medium. They should actually filter much longer before going into bypass. If you wonder what I'm talking about, the filter evaluation discuss' it. Basically, what he found was the filters don't do much after about 500-1000 mi. It's at http://www.angelfire.com/indie/truck/oilfilterstudy.htm

A little off topic but:
Do you guys tighten the filter by hand or by mechanical means? What confuses me is that I find two different methods prescribed by the 1993 shop manual here:
http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/s...e_services.pdf page A-7 which says to "...tighten the oil filter fully by hand"
and here:
http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/s...ion_system.pdf page D-7 which prescribes the mechanical method.
