after street port???

SO i got my motor rebuilt last spring and street ported it with 3mm apex seals. it this time i also upgraded the fuel pump, (and some other non engine related components installed). i hardly broke the motor in last summer putting only 7000 km on it and storing it in august (way too early never again just ran out of funds and had bald tires). my car chugs at idle, sounds simmilar to a muscle car with a lumpy cam in it.and it also smokes pretty bad at WOT (even at idle it puffs out black smoke), its running way too rich. So my question is will a reprogrammed ecu help me at all with the problem? will it smooth out the idle? lean out the a/f? i know everyone is just gonna say "get the PFC man its the best setup for our cars" but i was hoping i could get away with something cheaper for the time being. my mechanic that rebuilt the motor said that some 13Bs just wont idle properly when they have been street ported. he also took apart the whole intake system to make sure one of the passages wasnt blocked.

Any help would be awesome. thanx guys

P.S. i did already ask my mechanic but hes in the states racing for a week or something
P.P.S. i tried searching but couldnt find anything/computer kept getting really slow and no search results would come up???

look for a PFS PMS piggyback ECU...should be able to find for $400 or less.

stock ECU and street port and WOT, will result in another rebuild...tsk tsk tsk

you engine isn't pulling as much vacuum at idle now and the map is way off for idling...that's what is causing your rich and lumpy idle. You need some sort of ECU for your car to run properly.

if pettit offers one for street ports...I've never used a chipped ECU. you are on dangerous ground...I'd stay off the pedal

You can use a Pettit ECU with a ported engine. Your idle may still be a little lumpy so you might need to raise the idle up to around 1100 rpms to smooth it out (especially if you disconnected the airpump).

What size injectors do you have? I've got a PFS PMS piggyback that was tuned for my car. It ran great, but i eventually went with the PFC. My major mods include PFS intake, PFS IC, PFS 3"dp and full exhaust, 850cc primaries, 1200cc secondaries, and a mild streetport.

I must say that with the streetport i'll never get a stock-like idle. I've had it tuned a couple of times, but it still has a bit of a lumpy idle. Not that i care...

You can keep the airpump if you use a midpipe. Most people just remove it when using a midpipe as without a catalytic converter in place, the airpump is just taking up space.

At the same boost level, the Pettit will yield a little better hp gains. However, gains in performance come from CFM and boost level. Simply put, you want more power, increase the boost.

did you use the 1200cc with the PFS PMS? I didn't think that was possible.

I had the PMS with streetported intake and my idle was fine...still used air pump though.

I have a streetported intake and exhaust now and my idle purrs like a kitten...Haltech ECU.

Yep, you can increase the secondaries using the PFS PMS as long as you also increass the primaries to keep the same (or similar) proportion between the two sets.

i still have the stock injectors but was considering getting some bigger ones. i actually like the lumpy idle, it makes the car sound mean. what should i do first; get a SMIC or bigger injectors and a boost controller? To what level of mods can the pettit or similar units keep up with? What level of mods is unsafe to run a reprogramed ecu?

There is something wrong with your car besides the ECU if you are getting black smoke at idle and WOT.

i have a PFS PMS if you need it. Honestly, an ECU would be the first thing i would get because you are going to need it especially if you want to change injector size and do more mods like a full exhaust. A boost controller is cheap as hell, get one for safe measure. I would wait on the intercooler until you do your ECU.
Also smell the exhaust, if its black that means you are usually burning oil. How old are the turbos? did you check them while the engine was out? If your burning oil at idle and WOT and it smoke pretty badly i would say that its the turbos.

PS I have that PFS ecu, a DP, and BNR stage 2 turbos if you need, and an RE intake.

yo bro - I've been helping you every step of the way, and sounds like you've got your smoke colors nailed down...

good luck to you

Black smoke during idle
Black smoke during WOT

Does it blow black smoke when just driving around normally??

My guess = Blown turbo
