Accessory that turns on at idle???
Hey guys, I am sick of the annoying sound that my airpump makes!! I know that it is easy to disingage but it will cause a lumpy idle if it is not engaged during idle.
I want to know if there is an accessory that gets power(switches on) when the clutch is engaged?
I want to know so I can relay the airpump electrical connector to this power source so that the airpump is only functioning when the car is at idle and will fix the lumpy idle problem.
I am just thinking. . . . . . .
good idea or bad??
Tell me what you think or if you know what wire to use!
Thanks
Justus

Bad idea. You will clog your cat by doing this and potentially foul your car up with constant electrical gremlins. If you don't like your air pump and its set up, get a midpipe and remove the air pump.

I know the dangers of clogging the cat. but it will still be active at idle if I set it up this way and otherwise the car should be running hot enough to compenstate(right?)
If thats not the case can you explain why it clogges the cat. I searched and searched and I cannot find any conclusions.
Thanks,
Justus

Wrong. The air pump continuously forces air into the cat. If you shut it off above idle, your cat will not get air when it needs it the most. If you shut it off during driving you might as well remove it because you aren't doing a damn thing to help your car.

ok, I guess I am just looking for an explination on what the airpump does to consevre the cat. By pushing air into the cat b/t idle and 3800 rpms how does this help keep the cat. from breaking down?? I thought the airpump was used to keep the emissions down when the car was cold.
Please help me make sense of its function
Thanks for the responses porscheGuy

Your main cat works best when it is heated up. It helps control emissions during driving by burning excess hydro carbons that are released from your engine while it is running.
If you don't like it go with a midpipe setup, but this will not pass emissions. From when I have read on your other threads though you should be doing reliability mods first before your attempt this as it will require other upgrades.
Get a downpipe and keep your stock main cat until you are ready, or feel the need, to make the necessary upgrades for a midpipe.

I can't go with a midpipe right now b/c of lack of mods preformed. Although I do plan on doing that in the distant future, right now I am looking for a good solution to elminate the airpump while driving without screwing up the car.
Your explination of the airpump is helpful, can you elaborate on why it will clog the cat. if it is discounted while driving(the cat. should be heated up while driving)
Thanks for the input!

Why are you so insistant on removing your airpump?
What are you hoping to acomplish by doing this (other then blowing up your motor)?

The idle will be lumpy yes but nothing that is annoying. You can get rid of the air pump and cat and run a resistor so the ECU thinks the air pump is running I think. Other than that I don't see a way of keeping the main cat and not the air pump. I was always told the air pump only comes on at certian rpm's, like 1250-3675 rpms or somewhere around there.

Probably better than defeating it at this stage of the game.
