about to own an rx7...want help on buying and owning
alright, i used to own a sport compact. i went as far as possible with performance and because it was limited in upgrades availiable i ended up doing the lightweight wheels and carbon fiber hood and such. im tired of owning a "riced" out car and feel the need to finally achieve my new dream. as an autoXer i have found the FD rx7 to be an amazing machine and i want help on ownership
how do i look for an FD, what kind of qualities and things do i need to inspect when checking one out?
also, what is owning an FD like and are the motors really strong if maintenance is kept up.
i should be living next to rotary performance in garland next year so all my service would be presumably done there.
ANY comments or stories or ideas about owning an rx7 are appreciated
i will be in college, not driving the car as much except on weekends as the college provides safe parking and transportation for all school related events
also how do other people react to the 7 when they see it. hopefully not TOO much attention, im shying away from that.

http://www.rx7turboturbo.com/robrobinette/buyaused.htm is a good resource.
If you are shying away from too much attention, I would suggest you get one in Black or Montego Blue.

Well the RX-7 does draw some attention. In my complex when I had my car parked, it kind of stuck out like a sore thumb. I admit I was paranoid people would mess with it.
When I bought my RX-7 it had 32,000 miles on it and I ran it to 78,000 before a water pump went south. I'm planning on buying another RX-7 soon, and I have to admit, this forum scared me with the talk of blown motors. I'm beginning to suspect a lot of the problems are with either heavily modified motors, or a heavy foot on the gas.
Here's a quote I found on edmunds.
Review: With regular Maintaince, the car is ultra reliable. My FD3s (3rd gen RX-7)just turned 140,000 miles... the only thing wrong with it is a squeek from the rear, and fading paint... but the car has been in the desert climate in the middle of nevada for 10 years...
Personally, I had to have my Mazda B2200 motor rebuilt at 122k. My toyota celica motor rebuilt at about 135k and my '88 Camry at 140k has a head gasket leak so I may have this engine rebuilt as well. So if they say the average life of an FD engine is 100k or a little less, is it really that bad considering I know all these FD owners are not commuting with the car at 65 mph.
