99 spec turbos

NEW 99 spec turbos go for ~$3500. Much better turbos can be had for that kind of money. But if you must know, I think the forum member jt-imports can get the for you pretty cheap.

You can get your twins rebuilt for about $1400 and not have to deal with any tuning. You can get BNR stage 2 twins for about $1600, and if you run them at stock boost levels you shouldn't need to do much tuning.
But to gain any real power from the 99 spec twins, as Mahjik suggested you'll need to turn up the boost. Your ECU can't handle that, so you'd need to do some tuning for them anyway. It is possible to get the 99 spec twins and run them at 10 psi and not have to tune them, but why pay so much money for turbos that you're not going to use the potential of?

well, i should have mentioned earlier......
i have an M2 stage 3 stock ECU...... they are set to run at 13psi. So, Im sure that will tap into their potential
also, what's your opinion on buying a "used" set from jtimports (since you can buy 4-5 for the price of one new)???
so far ebay looks like the best "new" option. thanks for the suggestion..... for some reason i hadn't thought to look there.....

the thing is...i really dont think the 99 set will be worth the money.
the only beneficial thing that ive read...is that it spools a bit quicker and that its a bit better in the mid rpm range. but for the money i would rather just get a set of bnr stage 2 or 3s.
i guess the only drawback to the bnrs is that if you dont have the parts necessary to make it work efficiently like a nice intercooler and bigger secondaries etc..

With brand new turbos you don't worry about quality issues.
As Majik pointed out--the '99 J-spec twins are just part of the picture when making reliable rwhp. My '99s along with a host of other mods easily boosted to 16 psi resulting in 370 rwhp. FWIW Tim Benton's J-specs with similar mods made 360 rwhp @ 14.5 psi.
While peak rwhp is good for bragging and street racing, it's the throttle response you get from the '99s that's so sweet. Boost response is freaking right now...no waiting around for spool-up!
Brand new '99 J-specs are no joke, and are definitely worth the money in my experience. I paid $2600 in Nov '02. SR Motorsports was having a "garage sale", and I snapped up their last set at that price.

There are 2 different 99 twins, most of them are identicle to the 93-95 twins, the only ones that are really different are the RZ twins. Dont just go buy some "99 Jspec twins" on ebay for cheap cause they are prob no different than the 93-95 twins.
In addition even the Rz ones, I've never been able to find a dyno that showed they make more power or have a more broad powerband than the stockers...even at the same boost levels. This is based off the assumption that the twins are healthy and dont have bad turbine wheels from apex seals going thry them.....which is prob what the problem was if someone had stock twins that were "laggy"

Is there any way just looking at a set to tell the difference between an OE 93-95 set, the '99 set that are basically the same, and then the upgraded RZ '99 set? Any markings or visible differences if you have them off the car?

Are yours brand new ?
Price?
Are they identical to the ones Ari is selling ?
Who's fan will you be next year ?
( I assume DC will go kick butt at LeMans or some series where he could easily be the top driver.)
