99 spec rear tinted window

VERY interesting! I've never caught that one!
That would be sweet to have, but the SHIPPING? Good lord!
Wonder if a glass company can get replacement glass that has dark defroster lines. Might be worth looking in to. If they have to get it from Mazda, and Mazda obviously stopped making the orange line windows....

Imagine that's only fitted to RS/RZ, not base models ?? - goes by F140-63-930A.
Bargain basement ones start F132 and miss the A on the end.
Personally, be looking at the aftermarket glass suppliers to see if they have hatch glass first, although finding anything beyond windscreens might be hard.

From the SAFELITE site...interesting they list two different back glasses! You may have to hit 'next' once to see them.

All it shows is "blue tinted" or "grey tinted" for the two selections.
I don't think the factory FD rear hatch glass is tinted at ALL, not even a light OEM tint.
If the tint is in the glass, it will help mask the color of the defroster lines. The lines are applied to the inside surface of the glass, and factory tint is in the middle of the glass.
I know a guy here locally who has a glass shop, I might have to give him a call on this one.

Yeah, I know my stock glass is not tinted at all. So I was intrigued to find two different 'tinted' glasses offered.....

It's true the J-spec OEM rear hatch is factory tinted. Kinda like the "privacy" glass that SUV's get on the rear glass.
I see someone posted the part numbers. Are those the J-spec numbers? If they're the Americas spec numbers, it's not going to matter since none of our glasses are tinted.
It would be interesting to see if the side windows could be tinted as well.
Does anyone know who was the OEM manufacturer who made our glass?

Although it's aftermarket tint, my brother's newly acquired FD has tint on the rear glass and you can't see much of anything out the back at night. backing up is not fun at all.
based on my experience driving his car, I'm thinking twice about tinting the rear glass.

I was never a big fan of the tint to begin with. But for some reason, it does look rather nice on the FD when it's done by the factory.
If it turns out to be too much, then obviously I'll pass. But at the moment, I'm seriously considering it.

Do keep in mind that the factory glass does have some tint. Some exterior colors were paired with a grayish tint while other were paired with a bronze tint. I discovered this when some ****** smashed my window while parked on the street a few years ago.

Holy thread bump. Sorry guys. I searched and this is what I found. I am buying a rear hatch glass from a guy that says he has the oem blue and gray tint. He says both pieces of glass are from japan. I have no idea which one to have him ship me? I'm going to call Ray in the morning to see if he can shine a light on this tint issue as well. I'll update when I find out. Thanks

Just to let you all know, here in Australia, I can get both 99-spec tinted front and rear glass all day, every day. In fact, that is all that is available here from my installer if I break a window.
When my front windschield shattered recently, the installer could only source 99-spec tinted front windshield with a tinted strip along the top edge. It was that or nothing.
I also asked him about the back hatch glass, and all he can get me is the factory tinted 1999-onwards rear glass. I pretty much have no option but to use these in my 1992 JDM car if I get glass breakage in future.
So yes, the short answer is, someone somewhere is still supplying them and making the tinted 99 glass. Probably aftermarket, due to the very reasonable cost here, but this glass definitely exists readily in Australia at least. Probably because we got the FD up til 2002.
** Also, I have very dark aftermarket tint on my rear glass at the moment (came on the car) and reversing at night is basically the worst thing ever. Especially at an unknown house or driveway you dont know well enough. This aftermarket tint looks to be 15% or possibly darker. Whoever put it on was an idiot.

The up-spec 99+ 280hp JDM FD's received it, the base model FD's didn't.
Type R, Type R Bathurst, Type R Bathurst R, Type RS, Type RZ, Spirit R Type A, B, (and 255hp) automatic Type C all had it standard.
All later FD's here are JDM imports.

Gomez, well if we got them only til 1998, then that means I've seen a 2001 with incorrect plating/identity getting around, passing itself off as an Aussie built car....?
In any case, the tinted glass is available new to me. So its still around in some form, probably aftermarket.

How did you tell it was aussie build? My car has all the oem plating in English the cars are still built in Japan and imported by me, the compliance plate isn't under the hood it's in the passenger door sill.
