Sorry to hear about your car but I am glad you are ok. The car can be replaced, you cannot.

I would bet a fuel hose burst or the fuel pulsation dampner started leaking.

Possible.. The car basicly exploded.. The force of the explosion was enough to snap my carbon fiber hood in half and put a crack in the windsheild.. SCARED THE **** OUT OF ME!...

I spoke with my insurance company. The said it would be covered under my comprehensive coverage and they waved the 500 deductable because it was fire dmg. I have yet to speak with the guy who determines the damage to the car... But looking at the car i know for a fact its a total lose.. :T

That could have very well been mine last friday morning. The only difference is there was a county bus driver who stopped when they saw the smoke and handed me a fire extinguisher. My fire only lasted maybe 60 seconds total, but the horror I felt when I opened the hood and saw flames was unforgettable. I know what you're feeling and I am so sorry yours was a total loss. I will never drive without an extinguisher again. Hopefully the pics of your loss will shock other owners into getting one as well.

O ****!!

Sorry man, i hate seeing threads like this. But im glad you are ok, i hope someday you get another FD again if you're planning to.

But what do you think caused it? Have you done any engine work/maintenance recently? Maybe a hose came loose or basically just old parts wearing out?

Ray at Malloy told me they redesigned the hose that runs from the fuel rail to the primary injectors in 94. They have a kit to repair that part of the fuel system that's 70 bucks. He also told me to replace the FPD as it is "a fire waiting to happen." So if you own a 93 you might want to consider this as a "reliability upgrade." It's a hell of a lot more important than any other reliability upgrades.

Every fire thread makes me sick to my stomach...im thinking of running complete teflon steel braided lines with AN fittings.

Did mazda ever re-design the FPD or is just one of those things that need to be replaced every 30k or so?

HOLY SH*T!!

Things like that make me feel really bad for the owners, like the fire that destroyed 16 or whatever at the shop a few months ago.

Best of luck with the insurance and trying to find another one.

Has anyone ever considered that this problem with 93's spontaneously combusting is a design flaw and that there should be a recall for it? Seriously, I think there are enough people on this forum alone that have had their FDs burn to the ground that a class action suit wouldn't be far fetched.

im talking to Ray tomorrow and im gonna make it a point to buy an extinguisher. good to know youre ok. i cant imagine losing my car that way, but it seems to be a very real possibility. may she rest in peace.

ArmitageGVR4 has a good point... ive seen what mustve been at least four "fire" threads within the past six months.

buy a halon fire extinguisher, dont go with the cheap home-depot or pep boys special, Halon is basically a refridgerant, its production was made illegal, but ppl recycle old halon extinguishers. Once the halon hits the air it kills all all oxygen in the air around it(its perfectly safe outdoors). Imosafe anywhere just as long as your not blowing up 25 tanks in a room. Theres a couple threads on it. Btw it leaves no residue!! which is a +!!

I used a fire extinguisher. But the fire was so intense it did nothing. Im serious. I used the small home depot ones. I had it mounted near the pass floor board... Peice of **** lasted for all of 5 seconds.
