Lightbulb 93 R1 or 94 R2 ?

Hi everyone, what's up? I'm a new user as you might know. So, here's the deal, I want to get a 3rd Gen R model but I don't know what year is the best. I heard that the ones from 93 have more problems and a stiffer ride, while 94 models have less problems and a softer ride. Does the year really matter if I get a low mile one (like under 50k)? How do you check the car before you buy it? What are the things that I must check?

You are right the 93 R1 has an awful ride, the 94 R2 has a little softer ride. Mazda fixed some of the problems from the 93 R1 and even more in the 95 R2. If you can find a 94 or 95 go for one of these over a 93. Do a check to see if it was in an accident (not sure how to do that) One thing is drive a few RX7s - don't just drive one and buy that one. Even the 94 and 95s can have boost leaks, worn vacuum lines and other problems. Good luck

If you want the ultimate stock RX-7, get a R1. The ride is not that bad. All the people that complain are babies. I live in Upstate NY home of the pothole and have no complaints about how stiff the ride is. All FD's provide great performance and handling, but when I was looking I knew that I wanted a R1 or R2 after driving both I found that I like the stiff ride and the non-textured interior panels better.

Go with the 94 r2 if its black hehehe. Seriously, I like the 94 because of the softer ride and the passenger air bag. Kwikrx7 is right about the boost leaks etc. It happens with age and mileage so make sure and check it. The 95's are even better and if you are really rich, import a 99
Peace

personally, I'd say R2 - they did make some fixes that will make your life happier. Here's a post I copied from a while back that may help you decide:

Just to pass my knowledge on from being a former Mazda Service manager this is some of the stuff that's different as the years went by, this will apply to all RX7's not just R1,R2's, touring,PEP,base, etc.
1. 94-95 Instrument cluster is different due to the fact of having no small indication lines between numbers
2. 94-95 Have smaller rear swaybars.
3. 94-95 Have different dash panels in the way that they're not painted and won't peel like the 93's
4. 94-95 Have 2 additional braces under the rear subframe to minimize the rear subframe from flexing under load(Mostly to try and prevent axle hop)
5. 94-95 Have dual airbags.
6. The EGR system on the 94-95 is different.
7. The 93's were the only ones that came with chrome colored intake manifold nuts.
8. The 93's intake elbow on the throttle body was grey colored, not black like the 94-95.
9. Touring didn't exist in 95 it was replaced by the PEP package, even though the PEP package was introduced earlier in 94.
10. Only Tourings came with glass sunroofs.
11. Only 93 offered a CYM(Competition Yellow Mica) on R1 models
12. There was no white RX7 in 93, only 94-95.
13. R1 and R2's only came in Yellow, Red, Black, and Silver.
14. 95 RX7's used R134 A/C refrigerant, not R12 like the 93-94.
15. 95 RX7's also used a lighter ABS system than the 93-94.
That's all I can think of right now that some people don't know about if I think of anything else I'll let you guys know.

R2

I'd get either R1 or R2 depending on condition. You probably won't leave it stock, and end up changing the suspension. This means you'll have the other R model goodies, most notably that 2nd oil cooler, that all the Touring, PEP, and Base FD owners want
