'93 Car & Driver Article posted
Hey!
After waiting about two years to try to find the original '93 article in Car & Driver where they compared the RX-7 to the new Supra, 300ZX Turbo, 3000GT, Corvette and Porsche 968 -- a wonderful bloke from Nevada just sent me the article. I was so excited, I just typed the whole thing in and posted it on my website.
Click here for the article, and let me know what you think!

hard to say....
....without the track results.....
But first of all a big thanks for that article! That must have taken a while to do......
Okay, well the testers themselves said that only questions of reliability kept the RX7 in third place. There were NO bad comments or perceptions on the car's performance. The media loved this car, I remember the rave reviews from C&D, Road and Track, Autoweek.....but they ALL had cars that spent quite a bit of time at the dealers being worked on.....and we now have the hindsight of knowing that most dealers had a poor understanding of the 13BREW, unfortunately.
So, all in all, and until the track results come up on your site (nice, by the way!) I will say that I would have put the FD in 2nd place, RIGHT behind if not tied with the Supra.....I am still trying to figure out the testers logic in placing the 300ZX in 2nd.....nice cars, I love them too, but....the logic escapes me......

I was just looking through some old Car and Drivers and I found another Sports Car test that has the Z , RX-7, Corvette, etc in it(no Supra) and the Z wins it. The RX-7 gets second only because the Z is more practical. I was also looking through there "Ten Best" issues and the FD was in it every year it was out.

Those idiots at C&D and R&T only bitched about reliability of the 3rd gen. I have a whole collection of magazine articles on RX7. Just about every article has cautions on reliability. Of couse, they expect supercar performance from Honda reliability. They probably should have gotten an NSX -- only if they afford to buy one.
I've pretty much stopped reading the crap from those morons that think they know everything about cars.

thank you for typing in that article, i have always wanted to read it. as for the winner, i dont see how the 7 did not win, they all raved about its handling and agility. how the living crap did the Z get 2nd, they complained the whole time about the handling and the braking sucked also, as for the supra winning, i can see it i guess, it is a great car we have to admit it, but the 7 did out g-pad it and out brake it, so ha. rx7 should be 1 supra 2. all the others in my opinion did horrible no good handling it seems. oh well just my opinion, scott

hey thanks for posting that was a great article to read hopefully all the numbers will be up soon. what's up with rx7 top speed test only 157mph?? anyhoo i love the rx7 but i honestly think the supra deserved to win, no flames here but it overall is a better car. i think the rx7 deserved 2nd though because it is a more pure sports car than all the rest and did outperform all of them in a couple of categories. .99gs on the skipad that's incredible

Hey, if you would like to see more car comparo articles that include the TT rx7 go to :
www.mkiv.com
Click on "publications" on the left, and then click on Motor Trend. There is an article comparing RX7, Supra, NSX, 300ZX, 3000gt. There is also one comparing RX7, Viper RT/10, ZR1, Supra, Lotus Esprit, 911 Turbo. Then there is also on comparing automatic rx7, supra, firebird formula, corvette.
Also, if you choose Road and Track, there is a 0-100-0 test including the RX7.
They are great articles, you should check them out.

In paragraph 13 it states:
All six engines make knockout power for their size
and types. All are fitted with electronic
engine-control systems and port fuel injection.
Except for the old-timey pushrod design of the
Corvette LT1 V-8, with two valves per cylinder, the
cars all wear dual-overhead cam heads that allow
them to rev freely and to breathe easily through
four valves per cylinder. (The faster DOHC 32-valve
ZR-1 Vette didn't qualify for this group because it's
way too expensive.) The engines' official outputs
varied from the Porsche's 236 hp to the Toyota's
320; torque ranged from the Mazda's 217 pound-feet
to the Chevy's 340.
Looks like they really know the RX7, with the dual overhead cams and 4 valves per cylinder.

No kidding. At 1.3 litres, those C&D guys probably thought it was a twin-turbocharged Geo Metro engine or something.
BTW, I'll see if I can get the table of test-scores and so forth up online today.
