Rear 'seats'... anyone who attempts to sit in them will have their knees around their ears... and moan and b**** for days about how uncomfortable it was... or perhaps that was just my ex gf complaining about being relegated to the backseat so my friend could sit up front :P

In all seriousness, they are handy to have if you have more than 2 people to move a short or unexpected trip. 3 people can be done comfortably, if the person in the rear sits across the back (sit on one side and puts their feet on the other)

It's the whole debate about, "Well, this driver is maturing and is getting a 4 seater vehicle. This must mean that he or she is going to have kids. He or she is an adult now." It kind of relates to the marrage deal. If you get married, your insurance goes down. If you reach a certain age, your insurance goes down.

II think the OEM rear seats must have been created to satisfy some insurance requirement to make the car theoretically a 2+2.

I would like to have rear seats, as I have a 2 year old son and a 4 month old son. It would be nice to be able to take both for a ride when they're a little older. My 2 year old loves my FD and we ride all the time. I guess I'll have to strap them both in the front seat when my 4 month old gets a little older

I love my rear seat! It works great for me cause I am only about 5'1" or so. I fit back there fine with a driver about 5'7" but anyone taller and I would be sqwished. They hold more than the bins do.

And Ramy is right. Most insurance companies just run your VIN and it doesn't really matter that you added a rear seat. The policy didn't change. (I have Metropolitian Insurance out of New York.) Two other companies gave me the same story.

I just took the rear bins out. It's free, it saves weight, better room for storage, and once in a while I can fit an extra person back there.

Play the game different ... contact your insurance company and tell them you are thinking about buying an FD with rear seats and what an estimate on the insurance. Then if you like the price make them put it in writing.

Like Ramy siad, they aren't going to care if you put in rear seats, or buy one with a rear seat modification. They are going to ask for your vin then say,"Sir, that's a nice modification your car has, but here's your premium on your 2 seat sports car."

If anyone's interested, I'm running a "GB" on the JDM OEM rear seats now... here's the thread: https://www.rx7club.com/fdnewbie-imports-172/gb-jdm-oem-rear-seats-589922/#post6228520

Thanks

If you're a short japanese person, my height, you gotta slide the front seat 100% forward, then there will be some room for the rear people. Remember, this car was designed for japanese height. If you're over 5'6", forget installing them.

hi, um not trying to undercut fd newbie, but i am takeing all my rear stuff out, seatbelts seats, the bit that folds down, carpet, and the plastic where the rear speakers go. i will be doing this tomorrow. its all in mint con out of a 96 rx7. if anyone keen give me a pm and i will let you know how much.
im puting a cage in my car thats why im taking it all out. allso ive had to girls in the back, with me driving, im not small, seat was all the way back on the rails, and i had a biger guy in the other front seat. so if you have to use it as a 4 seater you can, not confy but can be done.

once again im not trying to be a pick to fd newbie, just trying to help someone out.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade here, but when you get into an accident and have people who were injured the the back seat of a two seater car, the insurence company will drop you faster than you can say: "oh crap".

Unless you can get your insurence company to cover the car as a 4 seater which is unlikely since as a previous poster mentioned, big companies just run the VINs which tells them its a 2door 2 seater sports car.

Unless you can get the car insured as a 4 seater, the liability issues are tremendous.

Once again, not trying to tick anyone off, i'd love to do the same thing too, but once again, the liability factor comes into play.

I have to say, im the total opposite, i absolutly hate being a taxi. When i get my JDM FD3S the first thing ill do is put the bins in the back. Drivers seat is for me.....passager for a hot girl, period. My buddies can find their own way home...unless its an emergency, then i might consider it for a second.. Its the only way to go..i think anyways. But also the flip side to this argument is having back seats for two additonal hot girls...meh they can fit in the compartments

^ bahahah that sounds like a sound plan.
if you do chuck the rear seats, be sure to PM me. i don't think my JDM unit will have the 2+2 configuration because it's an earlier build date (correct me if i'm wrong but the 2+2 didn't come till august 92 build cars).

i'm gonna try 2 get my car registered as a 4 seater.

There are FD owners in other parts of the world converting in the opposite direction.
